I've got nothing against WIDE whitewall tires...but I think narrow stripe whitewall tires have their place, too!
I AGREE!, they do look really nice on certain cars. maybe nothing 50's really more like 60's cars but i do dig them
Pre-1954 3".......54-56 2 1/2 - 2 11/16.....57-61 2 1/4 - 2 1/2......62-64 1" or less till they auto makes droped the wwt....Dad always ran 1" wwt on everything......
I don't think I will participate in the pole because I like both wide whites and black walls,,I have had narrow whites in the past but I don't see me running them on anything I own in the future. HRP
'50's customs look best with wide whites and '60's customs need the narrow white for the Bellflower look. I like both so, I won't vote either. I prefer WWW on my custom a '52 Chevy Fleetline. CRUISER
Contemplating these for my 58 F100. 1" white wall. http://www.tiresbyweb.com/p-7233-gt-radial-champiro-75-tires.aspx
I do to a point. They were ordered new with my OT '72 Cutlass Supreme RPO code PX8 Wide Oval G70 X 14 white stripe.
What about the double narrow one's, i've known them as "double pinners". I've always liked them myself. Are they a lowrider and bomba style car tire?
I prefer blackwalls, but if I am shooting for I screwed with my mom's car look I love skinny whites. I actually have owned a lot of cars in my time that had blackwalls on the reear and skinny whites on the front. I always concentrated on getting them to plant first then deal with the other end.
I have to agree that I like them on the right cars and for 60's era builds. 60'srailjob hit it pretty well in his post. Different time periods need different width of white walls. Guys miss the mark by putting too wide of white walls on too new of car too.
my 61 Dodge has supremes with skinny whites. my old 49 chevy 4 door had 2" whitewalls and full hubcaps. my 49 coupe will have mags and blackwalls, unless I am shitting money when I get to tire time, then it will have redwalls. if I were in charge wide whites would be used MUCH less than they are now.
They are WAY cheaper than wide whites, so I like them <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><input jscode="leoInternalChangeDone()" onclick="if(typeof(jsCall)=='function'){jsCall();}else{setTimeout('jsCall()',500);}" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I like em! I got mine at a local discount tire. $360 bucks mounted and balanced. Of course I took them off and brought them to the store. There cooper trendsetter 235/75/15. They have very good tread wear . Here's a pic
I have wide ones (4" maybe)on the 49 Merc. sled but narrow 1-1/2" wide on the 48 Chev. Aero Cp. The Chev just looks better with the narrow ones IMO.
I was going to mount these black wall out,... But after looking at a pile of early 60's R&C Magazines.... Decided to mount them white out. I liked the look as a refreshing change to a early 60's traditional look that nobody did anymore.... The old magazines are loaded with "era-correct" trends that we pretty much ignore as being legitimate trends back in the day. {And yes,... I know the rear is about 2" to high, and I did make the blocks, but sold the car before I could install them..... }
Depends on the era, I don't really like wide whites but run narrow whites on my 60 T Bird mild custom, they fit the era. I also have a set of Torque Thrusts for it and prefer them over the whites.
