I remember most were just store fronts with hot rod parts in the windows instead of dresses. There were some great neon signs that were in the windows but mostly just your average store front. I'm thinking you are talking about the out side. A few years ago there was a great thread with pictures of the counter areas. You might want to do a search.

  5. There is a thread with a ton of pictures of old speed shops iside and out. Maybe somebody can post a link.

I know you were asking for pictures from '50s, '60s, this is much earlier, Lee Chapel's first speed shop on San Fernando Road, 1920s...later moved to Oakland:

Atlanta Motor Parts on 11th Street a half block west of Peachtree St in the old 10th St business district. It's now within the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank.

  15. I dont recall many speed shops in SD around that time ... maybe Service Center on University Ave. Alot of manufacters there like Crower and Schiefer ... you could buy right off their shelf. And the factory car dealers supplied alot .

There were some, but not alot.

I don't remember where I got this picture. I may have lifted it from here a while back, and had a friend photoshop my '49 Chevy into it..
Always loved these old stations, and sure wish they could talk !!
    Cheers,

Anybody remember a place called "Speed Garage" it was on 51th. avenue in Elmhurst Queens NY. It did all the service work for "Elm Motors" on Queens Blvd. also in Elmhurst. They sold mostly high performance cars in the early 60s. Back then 62 chevys with 409s were all over the place and under 3 grand. I grew up hanging around that shop running for coffee and lunch for the guys. The only pictures I have are in my mind.
