All of these pictures bring back a lot of memories for me. I had a 39 Deluxe coupe that I drove for years. It had a 400 Pontiac, 400 TH transmission, and was painted black with traditional flames on the front fenders and hood. I had a lot of fun with that car for a lot of years, and miles driven down the road.

This is what happened when a propane tank exploded in a shop where it was being worked on! Shop had no insurance neither did the previous owner of this 39 deluxe coupe.

Tell your buddy I'll remove that eye-sore from his shop, free of charge.

Maybe it can be saved. Look at what they were able to do with Tom Medly's coupe after the fire.
It would depend on just how hot it got, i suppose.

Here is my 40 Deluxe that was drag raced in the mid 50's with a Chevy 265, 39 trans with Zepher gears and reversed wheels. The early photo is from 1962. It was parked outside in 1967 and sat untouched until I bought it in 1988 and had to cut trees out of it. It was rough and was rattle can primed at that time. In 1994 I took it all apart and had the body dipped and stripped and have spent most of the years since collecting parts. Can't wait to build it as soon as free time and free money allow.

Heres my 40 deluxe coupe, bought it as a bone stocker 5 years ago. had 42000 actual miles and 1 repaint in the 60's. I put a 4 inch magnum axle in it big n little 15 inch www's and chromed 50 merc wheels. Oh yeah and a 49 caddy motor adapted to the stock trans.

Moriarity, that angle is one of the best for a '39/'40...could almost start a new thread for "from the loft" angle shots!

I ALMOST "inherited" my great uncle's '41 Ford pickup (he backed out, saying the flathead and 3 speed would nickel and dime me to death, few service sources even in the mid-'60s). But telling him I wanted to drop in a 394 Olds V8, straight axle, etc. would similarly have queered the deal.

I've always dug that '40 look. But over the years, I've come to prefer the '40 Standard grille over the deluxe, it's not so busy and looks a bit like a Continental.

Since I like the '39 Deluxe just as much, and prefer its classic teardrop tail lights and floor shift, I've defected to the '39 camp. My dream car now is a '39 Deluxe woody, Lincoln Zephyr-style headlights and all!

Here's mine. The flathead is back from the machine shop and I am currently reassembling it. I hope to get it back in the car and on the road in the spring.

Moriarity I really like your coupe. How does the coupe run and handle with the cad engine?

Here's my 40 and the 56 I traded to get it. Some of my buddies say I was crazy to do it but I'm happier with the flathead powered 40

  29. Hey 53chuck,
You went and traded at 56 for a 40! A flathead powered 40? You must be nuts!
    LOL!

Just joking - I'd take your 40 any day!! I'd make the same trade! One day I'll have one...
