Great thread, I'm tuned in. FWIW I'm a Ford man, but if I ever switched over, one of these would be at the top of my list. They are sort of the unsung heros of the era. And only a bazillion times better looking than their chevy cousin. I also have a soft spot for the '57 as it was the first car I ever drove at 14. Car belonged to my buddies grandpa, we would steal the keys while the old boy was napping, and go burn rubber. That ole 347 and hydro would flat get it!

Thank you! If you end up with the car I can answer just about any question, or a least show you a picture of what I did.

    1) Is this the same body as the 55-57 chevy? If so, who designed it?

    2) List reasons why the pontiac v-8 did not become "the" engine and what led to it's phase-out in 79.

  27. Here's mine - a fairly rare 56. one of these days it might actually get put back together

    Attached Files:

  28. 53 Vicky...here's the skinny on differences you asked about:
55-56 only had star chiefs and chieftains...chieftains had a 122 inch wheelbase while the more expensive Star Chiefs had a 126 inch wheelbase. Except for the Safari Wagons [the ones like the nomad] which had the shorter 122 inch wheelbase but had star chief emblems and the upgraded star-chief interior.
57 was all the same but they had a super chief which was always my favorite. It was a kind of factory hotrod with the shorter 122 inch wheelbase with the upgraded interior and usually came with the 270 HP 347, AFB 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust, although my silver and white super chief came with a single exhaust.
Canadian Pontics in 55-57 came on the chevy chassis and as such are all 115 in wheelbase like the chevies.
I've had 11, 55-57 Pontiacs through the years and I'm suffering a severe Pontiac withdrawall right now...still want ONE MORE 57 super chief or chieftain hardtop or a 55-56-57 cheapie chieftain 2 door. Got a '59, 389, stick setup and a 4 speed just sitting, ready to go in.
