Famous Texas Tracks, Cars, Stories and SpeedShops

I would not mind anyone copying it, and will take better pictures if you want. The vinyl is really stiff and the backing was some sort of foam that melted from being in storage. This stuck the two halves together. If the artwork could be done (I don't know how) I'm sure it could be screenprinted onto whatever you might want it on.

 

I'm sure my dad had pics from Green Valley but I haven't located them yet. I did however locate some of his old 16mm footage several years ago and posted them in another thread awhile back. Here is a link if you haven't seen it yet...

I will warn you, the footage jumps around a lot due to its age (broken feeders and poor projector quality) but the good parts are worth putting up with the bad in my opinion.

Amazing bud, I have never seen one before I love it. Id love to find someone who could reproduce it for myself and maybe others?

I will recreate the image today and post it for others to see and enjoy.

I believe it is very important that the memories live on forever.

Where was Green Valley located? I have heard a talked with a few different people and they all have told me different locations.

Was it over near Frisco or Farmers Branch? I know the decal say's Smithfield and the distance between Ft. Worth and Dallas covers a lot of distance.

IT was located in Smithfield however Smithfield was annexed into North Richland Hills. There for it is now located in North Richland Hills Texas, just a few miles north of Fort Worth.

From Keller, take Bursey to the East a few miles and you will see 69Chevelle454's $400K house (??) and those of his neighbors. On the North side of the road is the sacred ground of GV. A few hundred feet of the top end pavement is still visible.

BTW, not read the entire thread, has anyone mentioned Ben Benson's Hot Rod Exchange?? Loved that place!! A friend of mine bought his El Camino wheelie truck. Now THAT was a blast to drive on the streets of Wichita Falls!!

Dont forget Willard Buff and his Gold Digger dragster from Houston, TX

 

Wayne Kleb is another one from early 60s. Also from Houston, TX. Another bad ass builder of many dragsters and old funnies was T-Bar Chassis from Dallas, TX. His name was "Moose" and he was a aircraft fabricator.

 

Dont forget about "Mouse" Wilson, father of Top Fuel FED driver Randy Wilson of San Antonio,TX. Keep this thread goin boys!

The OP should recognize this track from 1969.

 

I certainly do, that is roughly where the last few yards of concrete is left of the track.

 

Ive driven by it several times but Ive never participated it in it. To busy driving my car to show it off lol. And Im not sellin! lol

 

The walkover towers were popular at the tracks back then.

I can see that! So am I, just havent had the privledge of owning one yet lol. That place almost looks like my buddies Tommy Martin. Guy owns a 66 Charger 383 R/T, 68 Charger R/T S/E 426 Hemi, 71 Charger R/T 440, 72 Cuda' 340, 74 Challenger 360.

 

Car people don't come much better than Tommy. Been friends for nearly twenty years.

 

Yea, he's a great guy. When is that Christian Car Cruises held?

 

Usually the third Saturday starting in March. A couple hundred cars is not uncommon. With the Friday night Green Oaks/Arlington cruise now gone, it might even pick up some more. I expect somebody to crank up a replacement though.

Thanks for starting this....These pics and stories sure bring back some great memories....From 1960 on, Amarillo Dragway was my home track....would be there once a month and fill in the rest of the time at the smaller tracks around the Tri State area...Hobbs, Vernon, Odessa, Wichita Falls.....anybody have any Amarillo pics?

 

You are correct - that is my Dad (Ted DeTar) staring at the Camera! I will see if I can come up with the names of the ones you don't know. Thanks for the picture. I was only eleven when he passed so any pictures or stories you have of my Dad, Ted DeTar, are much appreciated!
