Starting the road to a smaller roofline. 2 inches to be exact! First time for something like this for me, so I hope it goes smoooth. Done a lot of research, seems easy enough.
So far the cab is completely gutted. Still need to line up the door gaps prior to cutting and then install some cross bracing.
Are you planning on leaning the a pillars, or stretching the roof? Keep us posted, looks like an adventure!
I was initially going to three inches and keep the back window the same without leaning the pillars and stretching the roof, but I saw pics and video of a two inch chop with leaned pillars and it looks WAY easier to do. Two inches of leaned pillar might not be so noticeable. I've seen some that lean way back and I don't like the way it looks. I've also seen some chops that stretch the middle and you can see where the roof dips down at the stretch. My skillset is amateur and calls for minimal metal work. Don't want to end up with a roadster. Haven't had any classes, just surf the net and ask questions at different shows.
I would like to here what not to do after the roof is cut off. Everyone has a moment where they say I should have done this. Looks good so far and, you learn things the way I do just ask people will try to help.
Measure twice, cut once, nothing to it. How are you going to do the cut across the roof? Here's what I did.
I'm gonna lean the pillars back. Not going to cut the roof at all. Saw this video on youtube and changed my mind. Nice job by the way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSX9w-MBUwc&feature=player_detailpage
I'm also installing a front clip from an 84 Jaguar. Still need to finish boxing it in and making it one with the truck.
Hey demonacm50, Wow, that looks good so far. So you cutting the back window the same 2"?. Keep us posted. More pics too...!
How will the windshield align with the lower opening since it didn't get leaned back at the bottom? I think you'll have a problem there. The glass will be kicked forward below the angled cut line of the A pillar. May want to seriously check into that before you finish weld it.
I'm with badshifter on this, I think you need to rethink the windshield cuts. At this point I'd make up a mock up windshield glass, a piece of 1/4 masonite or plywood would do. Hold it up to the pinchweld and make sure the pinchweld (where the w/s rubber fits) is level and tight against the glass or board in this case. Easier to bend metal now the bending glass later! Pretty gutsy project for your first chop!
Ill try to post some pics, but the pinch welds actually lined up ok. I will take your advice seriously and double and triple check it though.
Thanks for the advice. I was planning on using some cardboard to get the dimensions of the glass. I now think the wood would be more representative of the glass. Might even take it one step further and actually install (temporary) the wood in the windshield rubber to see how it lines up.
