Took the dog out for a hike today down another wash full of cars. Some early stuff mostly buried. I'm usually pretty good at identifying old stuff but not really too sure wehat most of these are.

  8. Thanks so much for posting! I have to get over there to see you and this stuff sometime!

  9. We made another exploratory road trip today after the fair grounds swap meet. Just got home about 10pm. We covered areas west of Phoenix and north of I-10 including the Colorado river and across over into Ca a bit. Some of the places we visited- Wickenburg, Bouse, Aguila, Parker, Lake Havasu, across Parker dam , Quartsite. We had a really good buffet dinner at a casino near Parker on the river. We'll try to get some pics posted.

  10. On Tuesday, we made our 11th adventure trip. We found and identified a few more wrecks including a 1939 Olds and a 1959 Impala 2 dr. I think it is a conv but, hard to tell. Eventually, we plan to hike to its location. We 'id' it from a distance. There are at least another half dozen wrecks we have found but, have yet to hike to them. Eventually, we will.
Also stopped at the Gila county museum in Globe and found some very good pics. Will share a few here. Also saw the Claypool tunnel sign there, that was cool. Will be working on some pics and we plan to head back there soon, maybe before Christmas.

Are there any 64 Fairlane wagons in any of these places that's been found as I need some parts?

  12. Dont kill the snakes unless there is no other option. If I find them around my home I catch them and relocate them. The rattle snakes keep the rats & mice outta the vehicles. I caught a pigmy rattler in my driveway. I took it to my son who is a state park superintendent. They have it on display in the nature center. He tries to educate folks about snakes. If you know about them they arent so scary. OldWolf

there have been a few times I wonder whether you had binoculars along or just good eyes to tell what things are from afar like that impala.

Thanks for the update. Foot trouble keeps me from asking you when the next one is. Maybe in 2013 I can go.

Hey I lived in Globe back in the 70's, used to work for the Chevy dealer there, Cobre Valley Motors. Used to do the car hunts back then with a coworker. Helped him load a 34 Ford frame in his pickup that we had found on a hunt once.

Steve carries binoculars. I was on a hunt with them back in Feb. That group is a blast to be with. Definetly go with them sometime if things change around for you.

  16. Thanks for the nice words and we hope to see you again sometime soon.

  17. We will be making our 11th auto archeological exploration hike on Wednesday if anyone would like to join us. We will be meeting at the IHOP on Baseline in Mesa near Val Vista at 7am. It would be best to contact me ahead of time for details.

Also, I wanted to share this old hiway sign on interstate 40 at the Sanders exit in eastern Arizona.

Not sure how old it is but, guessing 1940s or 1950s. Here is a pic of it from the day when it was still in reasonable condition. It also shows hiway #666 which is now hwy #191.
well, I was hoping to post other pics but, the new photobucket is giving me fits..... I guess I am the only one having these issues.......
This sign has deteriorated and has been defaced as well. I am working with the city of St Johns to fund restoration of this sign. the city is going to provide funding for materials and I am looking for volunteers to help me work on this old treasure. If anyone is interested in helping me restore this part of old Arizona, let me know.

  18. Sorry but, every snake I see will be killed. It is much safer and much saner to put up some rat traps than to think of wanting snakes around to get rid of rats? nuts. I would rather have rats than snakes but, do not want either.
Still rats are not a threat to me like a snake can be.
Snakes here are more than dangerous, they are deadly and that is that. You do what you want to in your part of the country. my .02

My second favourite thread on the HAMB (addicted to Vintage Shots from days gone by). Continued good hunting and as I said before be careful out there.

I often wonder just how this stuff got to where it rests. Were there roads there at one time or just off for a drive in desert and they broke down? Great stuff.

    Happy New Year folks.

For the most part, these wrecks are down off the side of the old highways from back in the day. most all were dirt roads at the time. When the newer & better roads were put in, they usually went over the old road or bypassed long parts of the old roads. We hike these old highways, thats where we find them. As stated before, where these wrecks are located down off the side at the bottom of a ravine or canyon, you can bet someone died in the accident. As such, we concider this sacred ground of sorts. We take pictures & leave them rest in peace. Hopefully someone will come by later & enjoy these old relics & do the same.

I do the same thing with the snakes, I catch them and relocate them, I have been bitten by copperheads many times, I just take a benadrill and go on about my business, now a rattlesnake is a little more serious, I have been bitten by rattlers twice, once was a pigmy and it got the end of a finger, lost my nail, it looked like it was rotten, it turned black and was pretty nasty, then I got bit in the foot by a pretty big diamond back, being a big one was a good thing the big ones control their venom and dont release as much, but I still got pretty swollen and was sore for a week or more. Now this is over a period of about 5 or 6 years and dealing with 100's of snakes, catching them playing with them and moving them to a safer area than around the cars and such. I do agree you should not kill them, humans killing so many things is one reason this world is so out of ballance, snakes will not bother you unless you really get after them, if there is anyway they will get away from you, if you ever try to catch one you will learn this. I could be happy to lend my lack of tallents to helping with the sign if you can get everything set up to do it.
