you have to wonder if the seller is just stupid or dishonest.

I suppose you guys are right, and it is not the money. I know what it is worth, and am not complaining. My problem is that I was not dealt with in an honest manner, IMO. The man is not a crook( I don't believe) but not doing business as an honest gentleman.IMO

    +1

I would let him know that what HE HAS DONE IS ILLEGAL and unless he produces a title to you pronto, you are taking this to the authorities.

  5. Chances are that if the seller didn't have a title, the truck is still titled in someone else's name.

It seems to me the dude tried to hose you so:

    Step 1: Obtain a title

    Step 2: Seek revenge

I can see it now, his mail box overflowing with subscriptions to gay porn magazines and pizza men knocking at his door at 1 am for the next five years. ;) :D

Communicate communicate communicate! As either buyer or seller. If they don't offer the info, it's up to you to drag it out of 'em.

Whether his omission was intentional or not, the responsibility is now yours.

But since the vehicle runs and drives, I don't think you'll have a lot of trouble getting a replacement title from the state. Get the right form, have the nice police officer come to your place to inspect it and sign off, then apply for a lost title.

    Good luck.

Tell him you will give him the $250 when he produces the title.

It's all on you. You bought from a newbie, paid full asking price for the truck and didn't ask about a title (no license plate in the ad photo was another red flag).

But what the hell, be pragmatic and pay the $250 and hope he comes through. If he was going to screw you out of $$$ it would have been the 8 grand. In the end, you paid $8250 for the truck. $250 is cheap for a title and a cheap lesson. I wouldn't do what some have suggested and lay into him about being misleading (which he was) or law breaking. He'll just tell you to pound sand and you'll be back to having to find a way to title the truck.

  11. Bummer deal! buyer beware and all that. If the truck has a late model chassis where's the title for it? that seems the easy way to go.
    Good luck

I would have never assumed a title would be transferred, bill of sale of course. Here in Maine there ARE no titles except for 1995 and newer, everything is done with a bill of sale and transferral of registration. It is not a big deal to register a new build from a pile of parts either. I would think that paying the 250 would be small potatoes....the big thing is you CAaNT do it yourself, you need him!

To me no title means something fishy, especially on a vehichle of that value. I can understand one thats been sitting for years or belonged to someones grandparents or somthing. When I was looking for the car I saw so many adds stating, "I don't have a title but they're easy to get, all you have to do is go fill out the paper work". If it's so easy you go fill out the paperwork, a vehicle with a title is worth more in my opinion.

I got screwed on the lien of a motorcycle I bought when I was much younger, the guy ensured me it was paid off which was an outright lie. I ended up getting my money back without any attorney expenses but it took a year. Afterthat I've alawys covered my ass a much as I can on any transaction. I did it my contacty the county prosecutors office, I was supprised at how helpful they were.

I suggest doing as you said, he broke the law, if he won't pay the $250 and come through with a title contact the authorities.

I agree. Both of you screwed up, you by not asking, and him not saying it had no title. But I put 80% of the burdon on you because I can't imagine ANYONE buying a car and the first words not being "Do you have a clear title in hand ?" It surprises me that someone who "has bought cars for 50 years" doesn't know that and hasn't been burned before.

A lot depends on exactly what his ad said. Did he mention title at all ? I think you have just learned a lesson that you need to accept and pay the price for learning it.

Usually ad should say No Title if there isn't one. If The ad doesn't state anything, to me that means there is a title. Because all cars need titles to be owned. What if it showed up with no steering wheel?!?! Because it wasn't mentioned in the ad?!?!
Make him pay it or call the DMV and turn him in. Lesson hard learned I say

I agree, something here is not right, the guy builds something like that to completion, and doesn't bother titling it, probably because its in someone elses name, or sold to pay off a debt, and you got caught in it. Happens, you shouldn't threaten legal action, you may both lose, you the truck, him the money or worse, maybe.
Do what you have to to get reggie, chalk it up to experience.

Lots of turn him in responces and people assuming that if the ad doesn't say anything about a title there is one. You being in the car business should know better than to assume anything. You didn't ask,he didn't say. 2 wrongs dang sure don't make it right. If he can get a legit title for $250 pay it. unless you claim you have sold over 5000 cars I'm sure you know how to get a title. Lesson learned, you read the ad,paid the price for what the ad was selling and nothing was said or asked about a title. Lesson learned $250

Maybe in some states, but not all...
some states WILL NOT issue a title for an old car... Vermont, Maine...to name two, and there are others.
IMHO it is up to the buyer to determine whether he needs a title with the car, and if he does, to ask if it comes with the car.

The only thing it needs right now is the diamond plate (or whatever
you choose to use) on the bed.

The above is a direct quote from the ad...I can understand the buyer's frustration.

Seller should have mentioned in the AD sold with bill of sale only if he did not have a title. He knew that it did not have a title and should have mentioned it, if he does have a title he should give it up. It was wrong of the seller not to disclose this. This is just my opinion

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Offer to split the 250.00, and see what happens. That happened to me one time I bought a 46 ford coupe, and the seller didn't have the title. I had to buy it again from the owner. 35.00 was a lot of money when you were only 16, back in 58. Stan

Bonded title here in Nebraska total cost was $175 which included the bonding agency fees. This march I can send it in to the state and have a Clear, Original title. Not a big deal if you have the Bill of Sale, but he should be covering the bonding fees and application. I am not sure if Ohio has a bonded title caluse ot not, but most states do. Just my opinion

I'm sorry, but asking about a title would have been my first question. Anyway, this sounds fishy because it didn't have a title when he shipped it. Why? Doesn't make sense.

If he's liget, all he has to do is sign the title and mail it to you. Somethings wrong and we're going to have a "How to title a COE?" thread next month.

One would think with a vehicle worth that much and had that much work done would have a clear title, maybe its time that you have to be here awhile before you can start selling stuff like it was when I first joined up.
