Flathead gurus , could someone ID the following markings ? Dh 2 9 and De 4 8 ? Thanks for any help.
Most of the bellhousing marking's meaning on a pre-1945 block and a post 1949 block are unknown to any flathead guru. Changed up depending on what mold was used, what time of day it was, or if it was raining that day. Nobody knows. Only the big "59" type markings mean anything specific to anyone still breathing.
I knew a fellow who worked in the Ford foundries in the 40s. They used markings for shift ID and production control. SO, being good employees they would put thier initials in as well as their birthdays and lucky numbers. Most all of the numbers and letters here and there on a block are this kind of thing............
This link will help if you have a later model block with out the cast bellhousing. Look on the top of the block on the right by the rear side of the intake manifold gasket surface and you may see a set of numbers stamped there. Decoded it will give you the Month-Day and last digit of the year of production. But remember that the numbers can become unreadable from age or just dissapear altogether. Plus some blocks just weren't stamped.
