What motor/trans do you this is best in a falcon/comet?

    I read all the time on here of falcons with various motors/ trans combos. While it is subjective to say this motor is better than that, what motor/trans do you think would be best in a falcon/comet? Lets narrow the application to 60-65 comets and falcons for right now. Please explain how the motor/trans is best, in what application it would be used in, and how modified the car would have to be to accommodate the motor/trans.

    SBF T10

    SBF C4
    SBF AOD

    All of these are basically a bolt-in application. In my opinion anything else is just asking for trouble.

    It's hard to determine the best engine/trans combo without knowing the car's intended purpose.

  6. 250 CI Thriftmaster Six, with a five speed.
    Torque aplenty, reasonable horsepower and good economy.
    Plus it's near bolt-in, with no clearance/maintenance problems such as those encountered in early cars with swapped-in V8s.

    Unless you're not planning a daily, in which case the sky's the limit.

    Cut out shock towers, put. Mustang 2 under it, and put what ever you want. I did a 302 with a T-5, but I would of rather did a 351 windsor stoked to a 408.....$ was my downfall. Good luck with whatever u decide

    289 with 4-speed or if you're lazy a C-4 or AOD . Not much fab work needed at all.

    Depends on what you're trying to achieve and how much work you're willing to do.

    Are you looking to cut out the shock towers?

    A 302 with a T5 is a good middle-ground bet not requiring major surgery.

    I still want to see a mildly-turbocharged 200 six with port EFI and think it ought to be good for around 200 wheel HP but if you're trying to make real power you'll spend at least as much money on a six as on a comparably-muscled small Windsor.

    A stockish 200 six is a really really boring way to get around, don't go drag racing any Corollas, but properly tuned and geared you'll get pretty good mileage.

    A 351W works well, if you want to relocate the brake pedal / master cyl firewall mount. A C4 or toploader, for the finishing touches.......

    347 T5. 302ks are plentiful and fit well, drop in a stoker crank and you're good to go. Aftermarket everything is available and with 5.0 mustang crowd there lots of good deals on used speed parts

    If your planning on driving this thing, these guys have the right idea. My little '62 wagon is set up with a 200/C4 combo with a weber 32/36 and a duraspark ignition. I love driving this thing! I had no choice in doing the C4 as this really is built for my girlfriends use and something about that sex makes the use and understanding of a real trans impossible. If it was set up for me though, it would have a T-5 which would offer quite a bit lower fisrt gear for better launch plus an overdrive for flyin' down the freeway. Right now I'm researching a number of auto/overdrive conversions and hope to have something set up soon, achaiving all of my goals. Not the most powerful thing out there, but with decent gearing it would be dynamite fun.

    302 with a 5 speed. Fits with minimal trouble, plenty fast, and decent mileage. If the car is an automatic, and auto will fit easier.

    The 302 is a close relative of the 289 which the car was designed to fit.

    PS the early Mustang was basically a Falcon with a fancy body. Brakes, suspension, etc will interchange.

  22. I have a couple of those cars (Rancheros). With out doing major surgery to the unit body The 302 with what ever transmission you fancy is about all they can take. Even with connector links installed if you put too much torque to them you will never be able to close the doors correctly again and cracks will begin to appear brhind the steering gear.

  25. Just FWIW, my daily is a stone-stock '61 with 170/Ford-O in it.
    No problems with HP, no issues with going or stopping.
    True, it only has 53,000 on it, but for a daily that my wife AND daughter can drive, it's
    damn hard to top.

    Though when I'm a few bucks ahead, a 250/AOD might just be the ideal.

    Nothing against stick, I have my bike (Triumph 955i) for when I need that. And it, too has near 50,000 on it...

    P.S. I feel these early ('60 - '63) Falcons are light enough to not really need a V8, plus it makes them a lot front heavy. And I am only speaking of daily drivers.

    I put a 250 in a 63 ranchero, you need to make a recess in the firewall as the 250 is longer than the factory 200

    id have to agree with the 427 and top loader, I was gonna put a 71 460 and top loader in mine, but never got around to it before selling it. but it was gonna be for just haulin as much ass as possible, big girl ass

    427 big block side oiler and 4 speed top loader. Straight axle, fender well exit headers, 57 olds reared with a posi unit, I could go on but you get the picture.

    I tried putting a 302 in a 62, and the towers have gotta go, do the 289s fit without getting into the towers?
     
  30. Might take a little work and some $$$ but what about an Aussie Ford turbo 4.0L inline 6?

    Or more for nostalgia sake, a hopped up Ford 240ci or 300ci inline 6 w/4spd Toploader??
