I just ventured over to the F100 trucks. I found this 59 big window and have always thought they was ugly as hell until the last few months so I bought it. Its a 292 3 speed. Not sure on the rear gear. I was curious about this thing going down the highway. Hadnt drove it other than in the yard. It seems to be high geared. Just curious if it will run 60 -65 with out screaming.

probably a 3.70 as most V8s. Six bangers had 3.89 standard.
    Axle codes
    3.70-01
    3.89-02
    4.11-03
    4.56-04
there are a lot more but f-250 and F-350 are included in my book.
Great trucks, always been some of my favorites. The cabs are really well made even though they have their own rust issues like any other truck that vintage. Your 59 Ford doors probably open and close better than a 59 Chevy did on the show room floor.

    Cool F100!
My 60 had a 292 with a 4spd but 1st was useless. I had G78s on front and L78s on rear, sids 3" axle and flip kit with notch in back. It would run 70 all day. 75 started to feel strained, gear-bound.

they were real trucks. we had a 59 f250 292 on the farm when i was i kid. i learned to drive on that truck. also remember running it on the expressway.

  10. The great thing is the rearend is a 28 spline 9-inch. So if you want to swap fromt he stock gears (say they are 3.70 for example), you could put a 3.50 or 3.25 to go a bit taller for better freeway cruising.

  11. Bitchin 60! Im going that route with mine

  12. Skrapin, that is all that truck needed. I loved it!

Well so much for the Yblock. Tuned it up and it was running sweet and then sounds of a pea thrasher came from the pan. Oil gauge would show 60psi but pulled the vc and it was dry. 300 and a 5 speed is next looks like.

Mine's still in the "as drug home" stage but it is up next to the shop. Plans are simple, glass, seat, brakes, different hood and nice chrome 59 grille. and what ever engine is cheap/free to get it going. Looks like maybe a 300 Buick 4 bbl and ST400 tranny. Parts are accumulating for a big window shortbed, hope to find a 57 front.

Hope to find a 57 front? Why? That thing is as original as it gets. The drive train mods are great but I would clean it up and leave it. Nice truck!

Not 57 front for this truck, for the build I'm gathering. Out of all 4 years I like the 57 the best and the 60 the least, by far. ^0 is just plain cluttered and fugly compared to the clean svelte look of the 57. This truck will get a 59 grille and 58 hood.

  20. Honestly that's a nice solid original 60. Why don't you sell that one and get the year you want?

    Hotrod1959 is right!

Been looking for an affordable local 57 for years, just ain't out there, 60s are much more plentiful and easy to find.

  22. Well in that case...

Yeah, I have a 58 parts truck with a good white hood and a friend gave me a pristine 59 grille he has hanging in his shop. So I can get rid of the banged up hood and mangled grille and clean up the front a good bit from the cluttered, garrish 60 look.

Congrats on the acquisition of your 59 f100.
They are great practical project trucks.

Previously I owned a 1961 f100 running a 292 V8 and that was a much better highway runner with 3.7:1 diff and more torque.

I have a 1960 f100 now which ran a 223 in it and it was great unloaded but even that struggle to do good highway speeds.

Since owning my 1960 f100 I have done several modifications to help make it a more driveable vehicle. I went to a 3.54 : 1 diff and overdrive tranny plus a few other comforts...
