These pics were found in an old family album. Any idea of there origin? They were with early Disneyland pics and Marine Land pics. I was thinking late 50's so Cal, but the cars look earlier? Some type of road course racing?

It's hard to say from the photos.
My first thought was beach racing for top speed. It was often done in Florida in the beginning.
Somebody has an umbrella so maybe not in California, although it is raining here today.
The first pic shows a sort of square corner so I'm guessing an airstrip. Most sports car type racing started on unused air fields in the 50's.

I know you said you think they're from so cal but is that ice? You can see the reflection of the car pretty well.

Sports cars, maybe SCCA? They used to race on closed airport tracks alot. Very common in SoCal.

My first thought was autocross racing. They're typically held in a large parking lot with lots of cones to mark the course. I'd say its the late fifties by the spectator cars and the Mercedes racer. Also note the umbrellas in the last pic.

    WAG-50's ice racing.

  12. There is a thread here, one of Ryans I think (search) with a video of 8mm film of a rally club in San Diego, mainly vettes that started out in Point Loma and heads up the coast into Del Mar. That area looks right and the Chevy wagon was a rally officials in the other thread or at least simular.

    Cool stuff .... got more?

Lots of airport type racing in SoCal in the 50s-60s. Palm Springs, March AFB, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield are a few that come to mind.

That was my first thought but the umbrella and the clothes the people are wearing in the photos say that it isn't ice racing because they aren't dressed for that much cold.

I have no knowledge of what this would be but just from studying the picture, it looks like a frozen lake or river to me. The non shiny places are consistent with a shoreline, and the horizon looks like a fairly large body of water. I do agree though that I would expect people to be bundled up more if it were cold enough for ice racing.

Whatever it is, those are very cool pics.

Yea, I guess that's rain gear and not cold weather wear.

Car in first pic is a Morgan, 2nd pic a Mercedes (190SL?) looks definitely to be an airport runaway course.

100% sure its not Riverside, CA. The long turn-9 radius is much different.
