Here is my 55. 3" drop axle, 4" lower mono fronts, 5" lower mono rears w/ 1.5" lowering shackles. Rear is on jackstands but the frame is resting on the 9" I have mocked up that will be SUA.

Planning on c-notching the rear to get a few more inches out of it but I can't really lower the front much more without stuff hitting. Seriously thinking about channeling the cab a couple inches to get the stance i want...

  2. Sorry for the stupid questions, but here goes...

1.) Whats does it mean and how do you de-arch rear springs?

2.) I have 3" blocks on my '56 Ford and it's not low enough for me, but the car is already almost riding on the bump-stops. Could I stuff a 4" block in there?

    Thanks!

@Mitchell dearching springs is when they basically flatten the spring so there is no arch to it. remove the bump stops and put the 4" blocks in and see if you can fit a smaller bump in it

My 53. Here the rockers sit right at 5 inches off the ground. When done the rockers will be flat at just over 4 inches off the ground. In this pic it still has the modified original suspension up front. (now has custom mustang 2) The rear suspension is heavily modified but still rides on the stock leaf springs.

Forgot to add the stats. Front is custom M2 bla bla bla. Rear is 3 inch drop posies leafs (in the pic it still has the stock leafs in it) moved in and up to the sides of the rails. Custom mounting front and rear, with mid 90's Chevy truck adjustable shackles. 8 inch drop with full suspension travel,no scrub line issues and no blocks. Gambino notch with a 56 Chevy rear.

    3.5" front, 3" rear

4" drop axle with posies spring up front, 4 linked 9" in back, 4" Z front of frame and 13" Z rear

MII with 2" drop spindles and 1 coil cut, GM rear with 4 link, about as low as you can get with fenders and no kickup in frame - without too much rubbing...

This is about as far as you can go without a notch on a 35/40 ....Chassis engineering with 3 inch blocks. Dropped I-beam in front. Still drives out great.

  15. Thanks! Do you even need bump stops? Is there a disadvantage to not having them? Thanks!

First, my 55 Olds.....drove it all over the country from 1983 til about 2003, put on over 140 K miles.
Next, my 61 Dodge, been driving it for 4-5 years, maybe 20 K on it. Yeah, they scrape, especially on shitty NJ roads, but they are low, and no bags, air shocks, or anything.

  19. My old truck. Volare sub with Fat Man dropped spindles, Posie rear springs, rear axle on top of the springs and a 7 inch c-notch. Drove the crap out of it. Was in a bunch of states and driven all the way. Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Ohio, Nevada, Louisiana, South Dakota just off the top of my head. Piked up a lot of gravel and dirt with the front crossmember.

How many of you guys have had to notch the frame for even just a 3 inch drop?? I lowered my 41 Chevy with 3" blocks and the axle hits the frame. Im thinking of a simple pipe notch for about 1.5" clearance (and installing a Chassis Eng rear end kit too).

3.25 lower in the rear from de-arched springs. 3.5 in the front from Aerostar springs and granda spindles. Second pic is before any work was done

....when you lower the rearend with blocks (for instance), what you're doing is really reducing the amount of axle travel up and down before the axle hits the underside of the frame. Bump stops cushion the severe impact of the axle. You may get away with cutting them in half to buy an inch or so, but that's about it. To get it lower you would be facing a 'C' notch in the frame for clearance.
The other consideration is the driveshaft. As the rearend is lowered, the driveshaft gets closer and closer to the top driveshaft tunnel which may have to be liberated from the floor and raised an inch or two. Don't ask me how I know (Lincoln vid above).

They're easy to lower but a bear to raise? Newer taller sidewall tires going on the front.

  28. The F-100 and '48 Pontiac have coils up front and leaf springs in back....my old 31 chevy pickup modified obviously has leafs all around. as does my old 33 ford pickup.
I started the modified project and my ol buddy, Dick [Xderelict] finished it up to get it streetable.
