Do you guys think it's possible/worth it to revive this engine. It's in a pretty dry area (for Hawaii)...the earth might have preserved it...? Intake and water returns have been open all the time. Mahalo Tommy
Might. The casting, if not cracked or bored to the max, hmmn. I guess the main bearing bores and cam and lifter bores are critical.
Looks like that thing is extremely rusty. Some of the head studs and bolts are wasted as is the water outlet on the head.I'm geuessing IF you get it apart it will be pretty thin.I've seen plenty of stuff fixed but I'm betting that one is done.
Definetely no frost! I bet it was placed there ABOVE ground, and TIME dug it down... It must have been there for a loooong time. T
He wants 50 bucks as it sits. Maybe I'll bring it home and If it's toast. - I'll dig it down in my own yard...Wifey would love it...NOT! T
For 50 bucks I'd take a shot, Like you said if it junk use it to piss off the wife,,, BTW my older Brother raced a duster when I was a kid thats what got me hooked on this Drag raceing crap Tim Jones
There is a far worse one than that in the tidal portion of the river where I walk the dog. It was awesome when the tide was out and I found a flathead on the beach. I am spending enough on machine work doing a flathead that ran and has a nice block, can't imagine starting with something that was rough or REALLY rough.
I would be very surprised if the block is salvagable since it is sitting upright and the intake is uncovered. I just pulled one down that was here in the desert of SoCal for years in the same position and it needed all 8 sleeves and had pitting in the port transfer area. It was a 59L block and the customer wanted to use it but what a mess. If is has been sitting for a while in Hawaii with all the rain and moisture there is, I wish you good luck!
Well, remember that cylinders will take a very large overbore and that valve seats are readily replaceable. The only certain death situation is freezing, and I guess you are home free on that! If you can get the thing torn apart...likely you can rebuild. Starting with a better one would be much more...sane, I guess...but this is the HAMB, and saving a lump like that would have major cool value!
Oddly, the little potmetal fitting on the manifold for vacuum hookup is a rare and rather pricey piece...most are broken. This one proves the engine has not been rolled over during its dormancy!
I am taking one apart right now that was mostly buried on it's side. Most likely it sank into the ground from sitting. Biggest problem so far is getting the exposed head off. That sucker is realy stuck on there. Side that was buried came right off. Plus no signs of cracks so far. Got it for free and may end up with a good block.
How much would a mild rebuilt (sleved) running 59A go for? (To put it in perspective!) I have a couple of hours of work getting it out of there & I have to feed my Brother in Law ... Where at $100 bucks allready!) T
I can get to the head on one side... I'm not sure the studs will budge though!...they lookl kinda rusted. T
