we were plannin on takin a trip down the mother road this fall but life seem to get in the way so its gonna be this spring, but we are going.!!!! even going to swing up out of the way and met benno!!!
I just watched a four-part series with Billy Connely, (sp.?) where he rode his VW powered trike from Chi to LA on Rte. 66. Good show, entertaining and interesting. I found it on Netflix.
There's very little left of Route 66 today. I feel very fortunate to have traveled it four times end-to-end during it's hey-day..........once in 1956 with my older brother in his '53 Ford custom, twice in 1962 in a Greyhound bus, and once in 1964 in my newly purchased ($85.00) '51 Buick Roadmaster. Great memories! My only regret is that I didn't stop in Missouri and see Benno.
Here's an great version by Diana Krall with an amazing guitar opening by Russell Malone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgeVx8QoVaQ&feature=related
Great song and wonderful tribute to the mother road. Here's another version - my favorite by Asleep at the Wheel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6alMntvDZB8
Anybody remember The Four Freshmen , they did a nice version of Route 66 ........then there was the TV show Route 66 with Martin Milner and ( I think ) George Maharis ....different tune for the theme song done by Nelson Riddle and his orchestra . Used to watch the show every week just to see the red 'Vette ..61 or 62 . T
wow...great performances...loved the Chuck Berry version, but Diana was a little easier on the eyes. I live 1 1/2 blocks of old 66 in Amarillo...seemed to be a little busier than normal this weekend, maybe that's why.
Cool. While on my big adventure to the West a few years ago I drove bits of Route 66 along 40 and ended up on dead end side streets that were once part of RT 66. I picked a small chunk of the old pavement from layers of grass and dirt that covered most of it. It now sits in my shop with other mementos of my trip.
I'm surprised there's any pavement left. I did the same thing on one of my little side trips on Rt 66 on the bike. Just wish I could take the '46 on what's left of the old road.
Had the good fortune of driving route 66 this summer, what a great trip, from the Chicago pier all the way to Santa Monica pier.............I would recommend it to everyone.............
X2! Just moved here from Mi. I can get my kicks just going to the post office. My favorite "Route 66" song is the Stones version from their 1st album.
I spent 2 weeks in the southwest tracking rt66 this summer, next time I'm not cutting it short......awesome!!
I found this thread interesting enough that I started a new thread for all to post pictures of interesting points of interest. All in all very interesting to say the least. Any interest?
