I found this photo of the used car lot at Downtown Chevrolet in Minneapolis. Interstate 94 goes right through this entire site today. Warren Cadillac is in the upper left hand corner of the photo. Warren later donated his building to Dunwoody Institute.

Really agreed. The edgy sense of realism, IMO, is what makes "Bullitt" an enduring classic, regardless of film genre. I think the viewer IDENTIFIES with McQueen's character during this climactic chase/dual more in than 99 percent of other movies. You're constantly aware that if he wipes out, he's dead. He can't leave any card unplayed. He pushes his car beyond any reasonable limit (knowing that a dropped driveshaft, e.g., means death), because he has no other choice. Even more amazing in that this movie was produced in the pre-computer-generated SF era! I honestly believe this is a better movie for that.

"Bullitt" was released to great acclaim in 1968, winning an Academy Award for the fast-paced film editing in the big chase scene (which had required three weeks to stage!). I point out 1968, because it's just one example of how Ryan allows us to stretch the HAMB limits a little, and within reason. The occasional griper not withstanding, I think (deduce, guess) that Ryan has eased the guidelines for this particular thread because it's a formula that works, for everybody. If you go back through the thread, you'll see that Ryan does, indeed, pay attention, occasionally editing or deleting posts. But, for nearly three years, we've been given rein to self-police. For the most part, it's worked, and it can keep on as long as people don't post stuff that's ridiculously new.

Your BULLITT comments are spot on. Ignoring this "modern" film simply takes a huge chunk out this automotive-based forum. It was done old school and think that qualifies it.

Was 1968 about the last year for realistic car chases? Perhaps. Some site THE FRENCH CONNECTION, but please. Popeye Doyle (or Hackman's interpretation) doesn't know how to drive, for one. He's irresponsible, putting many bystander's lives at stake. He's impatient. Plus he's driving a pathetic vehicle. Secondly, it isn't a car chase at all. Doyle's chasing a elevated train!

The other film sited that tops BULLITT'S chase is, THE SEVEN-UPS. Another Yates film and Scheider's chase is pretty intense. But I don't believe a minute of it. Again, another incompetent driver who seems scared to death to be driving at such high speeds. Well. maybe that IS realistic. But the 4-dr Nova is simply not cool, despite (I suspect) the fake high performance engine sound dubbing.

"Bullitt," on the other hand, is a movie that was well-written and cast, well directed and cut, requiring producers with faith in the project (of which McQueen was one!). In these times of over-statement, I'll still pick "Bullitt" as one of the near-PERFECT movies ever made -- better than "The French Connection," better than "Vanishing Point." One reason it's so riveting is that it's more than just an action/shoot-em-up. There are twists and turns as McQueen unravels, layer by surprising layer, "who done what -- and why."

More importantly, to me, it's a study in human motivations -- good and bad -- and it's a troubling statement on the toll paid for striving to stay on the right side. (Eastwood deals with this later, too. Very much like post-traumatic stress.) At one point, Steve's girlfriend (played by the GORGEOUS Jacqueline Bisset!) worries aloud that he's becoming just as "cold" as the baddies he's after. After McQueen waxes the last bad guy, he comes home to find Jackie asleep. Exhausted, he looks at himself in the mirror, then STARES at himself in the mirror, clearly troubled by her earlier words -- maybe knowing she's dead right. Wow! Movie magic.

Myself, I believe that McQueen's on-screen stoicism was probably mistaken for lack of acting breadth and depth, probably costing him support among the (voting) purists in the "Film Community." It's a crime that he didn't get an Oscar for "The Sand Pebbles" and at least a nomination for Bullitt. One thing about it, though, Steve McQueen was his own man, nobody's puppet. Screw awards, eh?

Wow! Your comments make me respond about how perfect BULLITT is. Who but McQueen could act as subtle and generate such a powerful performance? When he's by himself at the hotel crime scene, not one word of dialogue, only highway traffic sounds. His slight body and facial movements as he considers what happened is all you need. I love the scene in the ER with Vaughn. It is clear they do not like each other at all. There's McQueen eating his sandwich with glass of milk! His comeback phrase, "You work your side of the street. I'll work mine" is priceless. Check out Vaughn's, "That is hardly the point" to which McQ replies calmly, "It most certainly is." How do you deliver a line like that?!
