belt buckle, maybe a timing gear with eccentric for some sort of pump. would help if you tell a size.

Not 100% sure but some company made a variable timing chain setup years ago. I remember them from old hot rod magazines, and that might be one of those.

Must not have been to sucessful, as you don't see them any more.

That spring in there tells me this was somebody's attempt to provide automatic variable cam timing.

Right. I think there was a thread in recent times here on that or something very similar. Worked with the combination of the spring and rotational G-force?

I guess the theory was that you could set your timing and that slotted section allowed the timing to advance or retard a certain amount, depending on rpms. Maybe an attempt to maximize performance under various loads and speeds.

In addition to the advertisements, I think I recall a magazine feature on those, touting how great it was.

Why it's a Megathrustonometer, of course! The Microthrustometer was much smaller.

Advancing the cam at low speeds will improve HP output. I wonder what they did about ignition timing?

Here is a post on the HAMB from 2009 about these:

a popular VAR-I-CAM that was employed on many drag race engines actually employed a spring that would hold it to a predetermined point, and then as rpm increased, the cam would change.
this, along with a variable bleed down hydraulic lifter, (RHODES LIFTERS) was a real giant breakthru in the cam speck limited classes at one time.
I remember quite a few engines that would really rattle when the driver would let off at the end of a run.

VAR-I-CAM was built and sold in SAN DIEGO, Calif.....circa '60's.....

  21. Whatever the application, it needed a fuel pump that mounted on the front cover, hence the round drive cam.
