American HAMBers, please help save (American) classic cars in The Netherlands.

The classic car hobby in The Netherlands is being threatened by a change in tax-laws that will result in the ownership of classic cars becoming too expensive for a majority of enthusiasts.

Classic cars have traditionally been exempt from road-taxes. Our newly elected government now wants to road-tax classic cars in the same way as new, daily drivers cars are being taxed. This is a system where the road-tax becomes higher as your car is heavier and has a larger displacement engine... two characteristics of American classic car.

If this tax proposal passes, it means paying up to $3200 in road-tax each year if you own an American car from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. For the majority of us, this will make an already expensive hobby become simply unaffordable.

Please help us out by taking 20 seconds to sign this on-line petition http://www.knac.nl/petitie/ set up by the KNAC (Royal Dutch Automobile Club).

There are three boxes to fill, from top to bottom in reads:
    - Name
    - Place of residence
    - E-mail address (your e-mail address will not be shown anywhere after signing)

Hit the Send ('Verzenden') button when you're done.

    Thanks for your help!

  3. 3200$ isn't that a little steep! 500$ maybe! I'm not so much afraid of a tax, as I am for a not allowed to drive my classic car law!

...not sure how effective it will be for non-residents to sign your petition, but what the hell...
    As the Beatles once said...

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

    Isn't socialism great?

so if they pass that tax wont more cars be coming on the market thus driving up the supply and lowering the price? sounds like us Americans would want these taxes to pass in other countries :p

Government will keep pushing until you push back. Go see these pricks in person and remind them who they work for.

When was the last time you were actually allowed to talk to one of those bastards? They no longer work for you, they work for themselves and for re-election. Why do think it will be nearly impossible to pass the 28th ammendment? GGGRRRRRRR:mad:

Most jurisdictions in North America have special provisions for old cars, lower taxes, license fees and insurance.

We have a cutoff of 20 years or older and cars on special plates are not supposed to be used for regular transportation, but are allowed on the road for parades, to attend car shows, and for test drives.

Pre 1982 cars are exempt from compulsory emissions tests as well.

It is time for you to lobby your local politicians for such treatment.

As a foreigner I do not consider it appropriate to interfere in another country's affairs (even though my father was born in Holland ha ha) so will not be signing your petition.

    Ah what the hell. Signed.

No idea what it said. Hope I didn't volunteer to donate any organs.

That is crazy :O Here in Norway we are quite famous for having a car hating government, but at least they understand that when a car reaches a certain age it has payed enough. After it's 30 years old it's defined as a classic and only pays a small road tax. If it's old enough there's not even any check-up's to go through every other year.

My thanks to everyone who's signed the petition!
Very good to see so many remarks in so little time from so many places. :)

A little more background information: cars that are 25 years old or older have traditionally been exempt from road-taxes. The reason for this is that they're being used by enthusiasts who drive them sparingly. In recent years this exemption from road-tax for classic cars ('oldtimers') is being misused by people who buy a car that is 25 years old but is used it as a cheap daily driver. They're most often diesel cars that are relatively environmentally unfriendly, and have been imported from Germany.

The newly elected government fails to make the distinction between enthusiast with their classic cars and cheap bastards with their old cars.
They mistakenly claim that all cars over 25 years old have a significant impact on the environment and seek to cancel the exemption from road-tax.

As I've said earlier, this will make an already expensive hobby become simply unaffordable for the majority of us. Classic cars will loose most of their value. The classic car industry will effectively be killed off (dealers, restorers, parts suppliers etc.)

    Frikkin' A1 there bro!

Mind you, the Yanks are gob-smacked at our tax system, - earn a reasonable amount and pay 33% income tax - then add another 15% GST on everything you but - including in my case on the price of the Thunderbird I bought while in Oregon!!:(

  27. ..........This is also happening here and eventually it will impact all of us who try to follow the "limited use" rules. I see guys all the time with 80's era F-100s loaded with paint buckets and ladders, etc. using them as work trucks with historic tags.

Signed. Europeans especially need to keep an eye on what each country is trying to bring into legislation, some member countries have a tendancy to follow others in cases like this.
