I really like '50 Stude, Buicks ('50, '58, '59), Cadillacs ('54-59 especially the gold ones), '59 Imperial (which is kind of like the Vettes), and '59 Continental.

I am a fan of 1954. CHEVY PONTIAC AND MERCURY.

The '54 chevy and poncho are good kustom grilles to cut up and modifiy or leave alone. The '54 Mercury is just a great stock grille that only works really on a '54 Merc but damn it looks good on Mark Morton's yellow '54.

The 49-50 ford stock grill is a master piece out of the factory. I don't know why people screw with that grill. The 54 caddy grill is another beautiful grill that needs no fine tuning at all

How come the Welch Merc is the only one to have the DeSoto teeth behind the pan? They look so good that way!

As far as the '49 or '50 Ford grille, yes it's beautiful- and I love it on Pat Gahahl's car- but it's historically one of the first things one would change, (after wheels and stance) so if a car is chopped, it seems strange to me for it to have the stock grille, unless the car has an OEM theme, or is more hot roddy. Of course this is just an opinion, and Casney's '50 looked great chopped with the stock grille, but I'm just thinking of the many times people have asked me why I changed the great stock grille, that's why... it's a custom!

Here are some to think about too. The two grilles I liked were the mid bar on a '54 Pontiac and that on the '55 De Soto.

Every grille in a Caddy in the 50's a beauty.
The Desoto grille is a jewel for customs, and I agree with hombres ruin - single spinners are great - I don't know why everyone wants to ditch them.
    Cheers.

That looks great with the extra teeth added- You can't even tell. Here's my aforementioned '49 Lincoln with the same grille, but stock width. The Cosmopolitan opening is so large, the whole grill just fints in the opening:

'56 Buick has always been beautiful to me, but I am biased. I love quite a few stock grills from the era, sometimes they just got it right..

I agree 100% with this one. This may be because I have a shoebox Ford & all 5 look great in a shoebox. However I agree with Chilli Phil, nothing beats a 57 Buick grille in a 57 Chevy.

So in short I guess what I am saying is it depends on the application.

Perhaps the most iconic chopped custom of all time had a stock front end > Matranga

Good point- I would say though that the more expensive the car, the less likely you would want to disguise its make. The shoebox Ford is is exotic to us now, but was probably more like the Taurus of its day. Also it's a much easier shape to adapt other grilles to than the '40 Merc.

  26. I like the '55 Ford grille about the best of anything in the '50s.

I 'm a 55 Ford guy, and I LOVE that grille. To me it's sex on 4 wheels....

I also have a real soft spot for the 54 Poncho, and most pre 56 DeSoto grilles.

As for wild,.. I like those early 50's chrome whale grin Buick grilles....
