    Hey Guys,
Any local IL HAMB'ers, can youfill in here on what it takes to get registered in the state of IL? I am used to here in Michigan where you put on a historical plate, you pay $25 to the state, and you are all set (it is considered a "show car" to drive to and from car shows or servicing...but they don't denote what is included in a "car show".... :) )

Can someone help me out here - is it the same in IL?

That does help, although I love the way they word it and give you options enough to confuse you. So I guess it isn't as easy as buying a historical 1964 plate (in my case) and registering that plate?

Anything with the dmv is designed to be confusing. Your best bet is to probably go to a full service currency exchange or .cough. the dmv. Which ever you choose be sure to bring every dam piece of info you have, your DL,SS card, birth cert. I mean these people are so happy to turn you away for the smallest discrepancy it's ridiculous! I can help you locate a full service currency exchange by you if you want me to. BTW the dmv is NOT open on Mondays here in IL. cmarcus, I gotta go do a quick side job at the father in laws pm me if you need any help, I'll be back in a couple hours (I hope).

Yeah, they love doing that to you! I guess I figure if I am lowering the car, and "altering" it in anyway, I don't qualify for AV plates per their below statement...

"...The mechanical and physical condition of the vehicle, including brakes, lights, glass and appearance, must be the same or as safe as originally equipped. An antique vehicle may be a "bona fide replica" - an exact copy of the original in design, frame and mechanical operation. "Facsimiles" - close, but not exact, reproductions of the original - do not qualify for Antique Vehicle plates...."

"...As safe...", I think I'd want safer...at least for my 40 plymouth!
As I was told by an email from the Illinois DMV, one can find "Illinois year correct for your vehicle" plates and display them but you have to carry the new issued Illinois plates with you at all times as well as the registration so if you get pulled over the officer can see "those". Quite afew people at the cruisenights around here are doing just that- running year correct Illinois plates for their cars while keeping the new issued plates in the car and no problems reported even by those who were pulled over occasionally.
Now mind you, where ever you are, there are those towns where the police are...."stricker than usual"{add your fave explicative here} and may give you hassles...we all have a town or two of those around us. I've printed out the email from above for just such an occasion.:D

Stay away from the DMV it is not worth the Hassle and long wait to be "Helped" by the employees with crappy attitudes. Got to your nearest currency exchange they usually charge a 5.00 "Convenience" fee but it is definitely worth it, especially if you are in Chicago.

Yeah, our local has a guy with a half natural and half white sided mustache...not sure what's the deal with that! They will do the title transfer but I'd leave any question answering to the IL website..they got back to me in 3 days and that's pretty good for them!

Oh, while I'm back here, the vintage dispayed plate thing requires the front and rear plates just like the new issued ones do....Illinois just has to have front and rear plates on our cars....honestly, has anyone ever been pulled over and had the plates ran via the front plate...that's kind of like the time the sugar grove cop said he saw my plates were expired- it was a divided 2 lane per side highway and the speed limit was 60mph....damb good eyes or a very poor excuse.

AnyThing to do with title or plates i go to a title company much easier then the currency exchange and alot easier then the dmv there is a title company in lansing ,il that is good at this old car stuff. I have run A.V plates on my car along with year plates and just keep the other plates in the car Illinois makes you sign a paper that states you will only drive you car to show servicing gas things like that. TThe way they can get you is if you take your car to work the store things like that. I have never had any issues but it only takes one cop to be an ass.

Show car: You only drive it for fun and don't drive it to work or in the case it's a truck you don't haul stuff to the dump or home from Home Depot in it.

Around here these clowns who are putting collector plates or YOM plates on 30 year old cars (newer than my daily) and driving them to work every day are going to screw the rest of the guys who want to run Antique, Collector or YOM plates. Every time non car guys learn that I am into old cars the first thing out of their head is that next year or in two years their __________ will be a "Classic" because it will be 25 years old and they can get antique plates for it and not have to register it again. Those cars are never pristine mid 80's Buick Grand Nationals with 20K miles either but 200K+ work beaters.

I don't see a damned thing wrong with having Antique, YOM or Collector plates on your ride and then driving it to work on _______day quite often because you leave directly from work and go to your club meeting or to a local cruise night.

Il-annoyed also has an Extended Use Antique plate that allows you to use the car like a normal car from April to October, 51 bucks a year.

The answer is VANITY PLATES. In Illinois I had antique plates on my Model T and 33 Chevy. They were only used at shows, cruises, parades, and occasional rides.
Everything else I had vanity plates. My 55 Chevy 2-dr "USA 1955", 55 wagon "R TOY 55", still on the front here in Florida. My 57 Chevy "SHARP 57". Car wasn't sharp, my name is. 77 Vette "77 VETTE", even my Escort "MODEL T1".
You can run year of manufacture plates and keep the new tags inside with paperwork. But remember you will be stopped and while they have you they will find something wrong.
I worked at a large factory and even when pick ups could run a special "RV plate" cops gave tickets cause they drove to work.
In Illinois, it does not matter what town, county, or where ya drive, the cops are out to write tickets.

Absolutely wrong My dad ran 1950 Illinois plates (with the antique plates under the front seat) on his 1950 Chrysler for 18 years and drove the crap out of that car (ABOUT 65,000 MILES) and was never pulled over or questioned. And this was throughout all the Chicago and northern Indiana area. Hell after he retired it was his daily drtiver for 10 months a year.

Well, let's be honest, if one is out dickin around and doing things he/she shouldn't be doing{burn outs, flame throwin', racing on the street} yeah, jonny law will drop the hammer on you...drive around normal like, keep it down to a dull roar and don't get seen/caught and you'll be fine....I can attest to that.
There's always the exception to that rule, eons ago when our cycle group rode thru sandwich the local cop{think they have 2-3 now-lol} would follow us all through the town till we left...we were behaving and all..and laughing and looking back alot too. All jap bikes and anything from cruisers, crotch rockets, and standards..nothing scary. Go figure...

Thanks for all the info guys! This gives me a good idea of what I get to look forward to! I think I would rather bust a knuckle and bleed than get in line at the DMV....(shudder...)

You're over-thinking it. It's really simple. AV plates are cheap, but technically you cannot drive the car for anything but shows and "maintenance". You can run YOM plates and you don't have to register them, but you must keep the real AV plates in the car to show an officer if asked (I've had to do this). It helps to have a copy of the law with you since not all cops will know the YOM rule.

  19. I just run regular plates and just have the one in back.

Its not a big deal. Is it really that bad in Chicago? Go in to the SOS office (preferably knowing what you want ahead of time) having the required information/documents needed and tell them what you need. Pay them, get your plate or your Temporary plate and leave.

BTW I also just run regular plates and only on the rear and have never had any problems with the Police.

  21. DMV in Elgin has been rather OK for me. Not sure what you're asking, because if you have a title, all you need do is get in line and register, no biggie at all.

If you want AV plates, make sure you understand the rules. YOM as well.

As far as Po po pulling you over, well, in most cases stated above, the people were not obeying the law. Don't want to get pulled over, obey the law.

I have been pulled AND ticketed for no front plate (Stone Park, go figure), but it IS against the law, so what right have I to complain? And I know Stone Park cops regularly ticket their own mother, so just tempting fate, that was.

As far as right now, my '61 Falcon has two regular plates on it, and is a daily, sort of, as I ride a bike until the snow is asshole deep.

Born and raised near Peoria. I never got tickets or drove stupid. Often had little kids in the car with us. Yet was stopped several times just to check my registration, etc. and run the antique or even vanity plates.
Knew of a lot of guys who only ran a rear plate and never got stopped. Others did in different towns and got tickets. It's mostly up to the police wherever you live.
Here in Florida with YOM plates I was stopped twice with the 55 Chevy and once with the 41 Ford. Just a simple quick check but it did happen. Every time we were headed home from a local cruise night.
I mostly was referring to driving to work and for pleasure with tags other than normal plates in Illinois. Occasionally they decide to run spot checks at larger factories and other businesses.

I run regular plates on my 48. Saving a few bucks a year is not worth the hassle of some cop someplace thinking I'm doing something wrong because my plates are different then everyone else he sees drive by. the best part of having regular plates is I can drive my car any time, and any place my little heart desires without concern. Gene

  24. I moved from out of state and recently had to go through this with a couple of antique cars.
I was stressed out from all the diferent things I read about Illinois licensing, but it was really no problem. Do your research and decide what type of Antique Vehicle plate you want, it will speed up the process.

I've registered several cars DOWNTOWN Chicago, and elsewhere in the city, and have had plates switched from AV to regular and vice versa. I've never had a problem. It helps to have ALL the paperwork you need before you walk in the door, and don't expect friendly service, but it's no big deal. Really.

I've run AV and YOM plates in Chicago for over 10 years and have been pulled over twice. Once I was pulled over mainly because the cop wanted to talk about my car and the '80 Monte Carlo he was restoring, but his excuse was that he didn't recognize the 1950 plates I was running. I explained the law to him (he was unfamiliar with it), verfied it, and I was on my way. The second time was because I was driving in the ghetto late at night (where I lived) and the cops wanted a closer look, and to settle a bet on whether I was driving a Chevy or Cadillac. :) The DMV people will give you a lecture about the appropriate use of AV plates. Just nod, smile, and sign the form.
