Hello Hambers Searched on archives but still need clarification I have read that LZ gears provide a benefit in 1st and 2nd and 3 is 1 to 1 So my question is Which Zephyr gears would work best for my build? Running a 276 Flathead 7.50 rear tires 3.78 rear gears 1930 Model A roadster I know that 25 and 26 tooth are available Does any one have any input Thank you and I hope we can stay on topic Bboy
The 25 tooth ratios are 1st 2.12, 2nd 1.44 ,3rd 1.00. 26 tooth are 2.33 ,1.58, and 1.00 28 tooth 2.82, 1.60, and 1.00. 29 tooth 3.11 ,1.77, and 1.00. The Zephyr gears are higher geared in 1st and 2nd giving a higher top speed in those two gears. They are also closer ratio between gears. It will take more power to start off in first. I got the 26 tooth gears in my 49 f-1 with 4.11 rear gears. There is plenty of info on the net about swapping them
Save you rmoney, and have a better time. Use a 28 tooth cluster and have a solid off the line car. Zephyr gears give you a slug of a car unless the motor has plenty of torque to overcome the first ratio. Yes I know they are the "COOL" set - up but they are over rated. Just my 2C, Tim
What they said . The only reason I used them is I had them when the stock trans grenaded and i couldn't find stock gears locally.
have had 4 sets in my cars. LZ gears,3.78 rear gears,7:50 rear tires will be a dog to get moving. had that setup in my first 34 w/columbia od & mild cam, was bad. last 3 w/LZ gears have used 2 with 4.44 gears w/columbia od, 1 with 4.11 rear w/columbia od. you need a low rear ratio but you also need a hi gear when in 3rd gear, that's why i use the columbia od rears[bullit proofed].
