Look what I found out here in South Dakota a few weeks ago! Poor thing!

This was the best of the Model A's. If I can buy them right I might go and dig them out of the dirt the next time I come back up here.

Nice find Jerry. Looks like some decent parts left there. I need the visor off the sedan and the dash rail off the Sporty.

 

Glad to see another Sport Coupe coming alive, cant wait to see this one come together. Heres the one I built.

Cool car 29. Any pics of your car with the top up?

 

The "top" is actually a hinged compartment behind the seat. I made the bows out of an old porch swing top. Since these pics I have installed a bench seat in the car so I had to move the top back just a bit, I never liked the look of a Sport Coupe without a top, the drop behind the door is goofy so I built this to fill it in and have a stash spot behind the seat, thats where you keep the goodies! I want to learn more about how you guys did an original style top but chopped, some of those cars shown are incredible. I chopped my car 5 inches, and have always longed for a top. Contemplated a carson top so my car could go both ways. Are you buying repop original style wood kits then chopping them down or building the frame work out of metal? You never wonder if its a kit car when you see a sport coupe!

 

I've been thinking about chopping mine since day one, but haven't been able to bring myself to cut up those top bows (they are perfect). I'm gonna leave it stock height for now, but who knows how long that will last. I guess getting the top material on it will make a big difference.

I really like this one.... Kind of a bikini top. Everybody likes a bikini, right?

 

Yes we do! How about using some roadster bows and then have a folding top, too? Sort of a Sports Cabriolet? Could that work? Gary

I sure like the fenders on your cars, maybe someday I will stumble on a set. Any Sport Coupe or 5 window from 28 or 29 will fit my 29? Any others?

All the 28-29 A front fenders, splash aprons, and running boards are the same. The rear fenders are coupe and roadster only. As far as I know.

 

Fenders, hood, splash aprons, radiator, grill shell, head light bar, new floor boards, etc. All back on and fitting like a Champ. Scored a couple of really cool red and silver metal flake seats. It's getting there.

Sorry for the shitty cell pics, but that's all I had with me. It looks alot like stocker with those wheels. They've gotta go soon.

You're stuff always turns out cool, this one looks to be on it's way.

Bring it down here on the next trip, I'll keep the cobwebs blown out of it.

 

What wheels are you going to run?

 

Not sure... Would REALLY like to have a set of '35-'36 wires. I have a couple sets of '40 wheels, one set of whitewalls and one with blackwalls, but still looking around.

Any suggestions?

 

I'm sure something creative could be done, but.... I'd really rather leave it a Sport/Business Coupe, just because you rarely see them done right with all the original top parts. The door frames kill the Cabriolet theme.

 

I see a reason to chop the top.. Imagine this but with a foldable top.



Of course, a multi-carb Hemi, zoomies, and 5-spokes are a different genre than what you're shooting for. It might still look good, IMO.

 

DeSoto's Sport Coupe is one of my favorites for sure. The chop is perfect.

On my 29 coupe, I've got one idea that might be worth considering, in one form or another. Build a Carson style lift-off top, from the header all the way back to below the rear window. Round over the top rear of the opera windows so that they resemble those on a B-400 and, bingo, you could have an "A-200" coupe! Gary

 

George Poteet needs to hear that idea.

 

The SBC idea was just a flash in the pan... It would be ALOT of fun with that engine though. You sport us few fishing trips and we'll talk about it.

I have a slight problem that I've never run across before...

The radiator in my car looks like a 28-29, fits the grille shell perfect, bolts to the frame as it should, blah blah blah... but just noticed that it doesn't have a radiator support rod bracket. It's not like it's broken off or was taken off somewhere in the past, It never had one.

Should I fab up a bracket to accept the rods? Otherwise the radiator hose is all that keeps it in place. Right?

What am I missing, (other than the bracket)?

Any suggestions?

 

I would fab up a bracket for the rods.. There are people on here that boast they run without rods and that just the hose is holding it on there which is just fine. That's cool and all but I wouldn't trust a piece of hose to hold a radiator in place IMO.
