I tore into my Model A today, started with a complete car, and as of a couple hours ago it's in pieces. I think the rear end was sunk into a pile of chicken shit or some other corrosive stuff, 'cause the banjo and the rear of the frame is wasted. The rest of the car has very little rust on it, luckily it didn't sink any deeper than it did.

That is definitely the worst rust I have ever seen on a Model A. I would clean it up and turn it into a lamp.

Yeah, I was surprised how little rust was on the body compared to the frame. I never saw the car when it was sunk into whatever it was sunk into, but it must have stopped just short of the body, as the frame rails and rear spring mount were in rough shape. Or it could be that they stored cracked batteries in the trunk, because the floor is gone there, as are the subframe rails. In any case, I have a couple extra frames that are decent, so the build will commence shortly.

  16. Wow, I have never seen axle housings rust through before.

  17. Well you are OK then. Now you have a good excuse to back half it and the A banjo isn't your best choice anyway. :D

I don't believe that I have seen one in that bad of condition.

That is the wost condition banjo abd frame I have ever seen. I have about 10 of them and have passed up or been outbid at auctions on over 100 of them. Thankfully they are easy to come by. Rod

I seen a 58 Chevy truck that a farmer used to haul fertilizer do the same after he removed the tires and the suspension sunk into the ground, the whole truck was a rusty mess and it the the first I had seen a rear end housing and drive shaft rust out.

Yeah 'beano, I hear ya. Coming up with a solid frame is the easy part. My dilemma now is what to do engine-wise, might have to set up a poll. I've got three different engine candidates on stands, all fresh rebuilds, and am struggling with what to use in it. A semi-nasty 392 hemi, a fladhead Cadillac with Edmunds heads and matching dual deuce intake, or a Buick Straight 8, decked block and milled head (.050 off each) with a cam from Demi Elgin. The intake and exhaust on the Buick at this point are just steel tube stubs, so I can build mild or wild with them.

    Such a quandry......

  25. Better than me, I'm so musical that I may as well have hooves when it comes to finding my way round a fret board!

  26. All those engine options sound great but I think the flathead Caddy would just be cooler than hell.

My bet is fertilzer too. A few bags sitting moist for years will turn metal to dust.

That banjo is unreal! I know a Model A guy that would want that in his "unbelievable model A parts" collection of destroyed engine/trans oddities.
