Alright guys,.... I'll get the details exact in the next 24 hours or so,... In the mean time here's my problem/question. I have a 55 Chevy rear axle ( that for reasons I really can't get into,... I am forced to use )..... Anyway here's my problem, The axle bearings are froze up tight.... And to boot, they are the old ball bearing style.... which I hate and they are stupid expensive ! Have any of you guys ever found a roller bearing that replaces it ?.... I could spend a few hours down at the parts store with a dial caliper pulling my hair out..... Or, If any of you guys have the answer. It would streamline the process and save my hair.... If I remember what I checked today,... the 56-57 rear axle bearing is 3" diameter...... The 55 only is 2.835 on the OD and .9250 on it's with.... Any Ideas ?

Ecklers has a sealed bearing for about $45 per side: http://www.classicchevy.com/chevy-rear-axle-bearing-1955-1956.html I call that as reasonable, and it's a big improvement over the OEM bearing. Charlie
HW, the 55-56 axles are the same, 57 up are the larger dia. I know only because i used a 56 rear in my 53 when i swapped it, and also own a 57... When i rebuilt the 56 rear, i bought an extra bearing in case i needed it later sometime. I sold the car, and still have the 3rd new bearing somewhere in the garage. I paid 40.00 for it so if'n ya need it cover my investment and it's your's. Shipping's free Tony
I used a '55 axle in my altered built in '65. Used roller bearings on the axles and metalic shoes. If I remember right I got the bearings from the Chev dealer. They were a police application. I think they were listed as heavy duty and not listed as rollers. Odd rear end for an altered. I narrowed the axle and the ends of the axels were built up with weld and re-splined. An olds would have been a better choice. Norm
Hyatt JRN1542WB-15 (or) GM 7450792 is listed in the 59 parts book as used in 55-56 pass, 56 corv, roller bearing. Interesting.
The measurements on that bearing are Bore Size: 1.378 in. (35mm) Outside Diameter: 2.8346 in. (72mm) Width: 0.925 in. (33.35mm) That's the National ball bearing National - Wheel Bearing Part Number: RW507ER Line: BCA I did a search by size but didn't come up with anything. But price wise http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Automotive-RW507ER-Wheel-Bearing/dp/B007RUJ6OM 50.00 less than O'Reilly's wants. Or at the auction site 200824157613
I used a '59 center section, axles and bearings in a 55 housing. Cut a spacer out of another backing plate to make up the difference of the thicker bearing.
Well guys,... Found a pair on the "online auction sight" new in the box with seals and retainers for 50 bucks.... and free delivery....... Works for me. Thanks for your reply's.
