I bought a 1961 Cadillac Eldorado GM factory custom off craigslist

Sent em my $50 almost a month ago, I've heard nothing.

One month isn't bad. One week to get there, one to get back... They would have only had it for 2 weeks then.

If you're in a hurry then email them, but 4-6 weeks is normal.

It will be worth the wait. Congrats on the design photos! While the build record will be great, the factory patio photos are where it's at! You need to really thank the guy who got you those! Amazing!

 

I sent both GM researchers a thank you, these are the best pictures I've seen, I never ever thought I would get this much information. When I first saw the car I thought it was a creation from a custom shop for a wealthy customer, I had no idea so much more would come out.

 

Wow, I am enjoying this thread. Amazing find. Curious about the history of who owned it last, how long they had it, etc, etc. Did I miss that over the last 14 pages?

Well supposedly it was owned by Walter Hagen, famous golfer who retired to Traverse City, Michigan, and died in 1969. I heard it was donated to his church, thereafter it was in the hands of who I bought the car from. I can't find any proof of this, I've also heard the car was used by GM executives and possibly Bill Mitchell himself. Again, I don't know for sure about this. That this car was shown in Chicago in 1962 and is an XP car built by GM is absolutely certain.

Well,its not like you haven't tackled the 'impossible' before...

 

Damn, it's sexy. I love the rear wheel openings, fins, everthing. Especially the early photos.
It must feel like a headrush to just go out in the garage and look at it.

Hate to think that these one off cars usually got crushed or thrown away.
I went to the Auburn/Cord/Deusenberg museum when I was a kid and they had a rusty shell on display, it was a former show car that got used for fill building dikes. Like in the ground... Weird.

 

The church story is interesting. The latest history is what I wondered. Where has that thing been sitting and for how long? Has it changed hands multiple times? Just an amazing story and an amazing piece of history. Looking forward to more on this car!

that is a great find and I have enjoyed studying the pictures you have on the car. definitely worth a piece in Hemmings magazine or another publication looking at rare provinence. good stuff.

 

The rocker molding looks very much like the rear fender trim on the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. It would seem likely that Cadillac just sourced some stock from the same source that Chevrolet used. This trim is currently being reproduced. If you could locate the current source you might be able to get properly sized strips made.

 

If you look at the close up pics you can see that it's actually formed and is not ribbed the entire width,It's made just for this car and it's got screw holes and damage all over, it can be repaired though

Love this car! The hubcaps could be made but it would be very expensive. Certainly worth the cost for this car IMO.

The thing needs paint. It's been repainted at least once anyway and rather poorly at that. It's NOT original paint.
Whoever restores this thing ISN'T going to, they can't, save the original paint.
Instead of trying to match a crap repaint,
if your NOT going to cut it up,
AT LEAST FLAME IT !
Once in a lifetime chance.
That won't devalue it any more than it is already.
Have fun with it.
As far as it being a thing of value,

I repaired the eyebrow molding to get a mold from to get a new pair recast, this shit was one off built just for this car, the driver's side is missing entirely, it will be made from a 3D scan of the passenger side, American Bronze is doing the work, I think it's gonna cost plenty.

 

Nads, you are a man on a MISSION!! This car couldn't have found a better home. What an education this whole process has become. Definetly pushed your skills to the next dimension.
