Mods - please allow this to stay for a day or two; I don't know of a better place to get automotive information - on any automobile. My neighbor, who has no mechainical ability whatsoever has a Tatra T 57 B -1939?. I heard it run last year, he can't get it to run this year and has asked me for help. The engine is an aircooled flat four front-mounted The car has an electrical system, he has a starter but is is not on the car - last year he started it with the crank. I was looking it over today; gasoline is old (I can smell it) ignition is battery/coil/points - I have power to the points but no spark from points or coil. Need some basics: 6 or 12 volts (he thinks 12 but that may have led to burning up the coil) I think it is positve ground Any sources for parts - the points look to be in bad shape Looking for any information sources, preferably in English, I don't speak or read Czech but my neighbor does. I did 'google' the car; the best I info I found was a British collectors club but no discussion board.
Maybe put this over on thesamba.com I believe that there are some people there that know about tatras
Hi Dave, If you try and contact classic car of the year as in the pic there is a possibility they may be able to put you in contact with the owner of this one. I spoke to him at the show and he seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of Tatra cars. The man that runs this show, Dave Brown is a friend of mine and he may well have contact details of the owner as quite a few cars are pre-entered. Try and contact Dave Brown via this site, http://www.claphamclassicevents.co.uk/ If you have no joy drop me a PM and i will make enquires for you. It is possible Dave could be in the USA at the moment as he spends a fair bit of time over there and it is also possible that some of the HAMB members may know him anyway. If you think i can help in anyway just get in touch. Cheers. Russ.
Hi again Dave, Try this website, i havn't had a chance to look properly but it may be of some use and seems to be all in english. http://www.tatraplan.co.uk/ Cheers. Russ.
Hi, I am new here, but my best bet would be: http://www.tatraportal.sk/index.php?ukaz=popisky/t57_en&lang=en It is a Slovak site with technical characteriscs of all Tatra cars There is a Tatra club based in the U.K. for English speaking Tatra enthusiasts: http://www.tatra-register.co.uk/ Best regards Kees Smit
A work buddy is a Czech engineer and a Tatra enthusiast and multi car owner. He says it would have been 6 v negative ground originally, but conversion to 12 v over the years is not unheard of. The starter and generator will be marked with voltage, etc. He also wonders if it is a car he heard about recently. All he was told was The owner (somebody long active in the Tatra community) of many years died about 2 years back, and the widow left the car has been sitting in a garage or barn in PA someplace.
There is one at this museum that they restored some years ago http://www.southwardcarmuseum.co.nz/ contact John Bellamore in the restoration workshop,he or his mechanic may be able to help

People know all about the rear-engined Tatras but do not realize that the front-engined models like types 57 and 11/12 are as interesting, and arguably better cars: To my mind these (and the Steyr type 50) were better Beetles than the VW Beetle ever was. For a start they've got their engines in the right place. The chassis (type 11):
