Electric plug on 235 Chevy

Ok,my '54 210 just arrived today,will try to post pics later,and I noticed an electric cord coming out of the drivers side of the block. I can't find any reference to it anywhere. Thanks. Randy

If it ever spent time in cold climate areas then it most definitely is a block heater.

If is in a freeze plug hole, then its a block heater. Run an ohm meter across the plug to see if its any good. If its good, keep it plugged in in the winter time. Motor will be at operating temp at all times!

 

See I didn't know the had block heaters in the 50's. Car was manufacture in Canada so makes sense. Thanks

 

My '50 came from North Dakota and the original block had one of those block heaters in it. I tried to remove it ( the engine was toast) but it broke, did keep the cord sticking through the grill. Now just tell people it's a hybrid.

 

Heaters like this have been used since the 40's. Some went in the dip stick hole. Others replaced a head bolt stud. I had a 600 watt block heater, I figured at the time it cost .40 a night to leave it plugged in all night. I had a 1500 watt tank heater on a 58 Chev six. If I left it on all night when I turn on the key on a 20 below morning, the temp gauge went up to about 1/4 hot. I didn't pay the light bill there.

 

Block heaters are great,...My 57 Chev sat out at night, in Buffalo,...Enough warmth came from the heater core to keep the windshield free of ice and fog. Just park it with the controls left in "defrost" position. Got to thank that previous owner for that !!!

Got one in my 57 F-100 push truck. But it is mounted in the lower radiator hose bib.

 

Have to try that..lol
