That would be as close to the intake manifold as you can get them, right?

I never was much for having to 'burp' the system in the newer stuff.

Probably shouldn't post these because of the filth but this has worked for 32 years on my car. Remember at the time seeing information (magazine article?) about where the proper place to drill was, mine are 1" up from bottom of head, 3" from intake bottom edge. Hard to see but the lower part of the thermostat housing is off a 60's vintage 250 Chevy 6 with the opening that originally went into the head welded shut and one extra hole tapped. Heads are tapped for 1/2" pipe.

You can buy a cast (or billet:eek:) piece that holds a t-stat and is set up for the two lines in, a bypass hose, and a connection for a radiator hose.

Taking the coolant off the front of the ehads is a common thing to do on race cars. It eliminates the need for the intake manifold to handle the water coming out of the heads. It works fine on race cars, and can work fine on a street car too.

This....a lot of though went into the design of that block. You might think that ok cool the heads by doing that, but you cause a lot of turbulence doing that
