I am at that stage, and am looking for ideas to fab up a column drop for my 31 A. So if you would be so kind, show me what you got!

  2. Search in the tech archives. There was a thread on building one that really looked period correct.

I cut out the tank of my 30 (same as early 31), retained the tank column support at top, used a late 31 column support (reversed) at the bottom.....

In my old 36 coupe, I used an aluminum piston rod I picked up at a swap meet for $5.

The one in my 59 truck is a flathead connecting rod, actually fits o nthe column pretty good. I was debating keeping it or find something else closer to stock.. but at this point it works. could take a picture if you want..

Custom made column drop mounted under a 34 Chevy Master dash in my 30 A coupe. Lower end is clamped in a sleeve welded to the firewall. Had to put a removable shift lever on the lower end of column so it could be installed and removed, column shift automatic.

The factory Model A column drops use a rubber pad around the column tube in the bracket. The 28-31 units are soldered to the bottom of the gas tank. The late 31 units bolt to the dash rail under the top of the dash.

If you want it to be rock solid, you might consider making the drop independent of the dash. Although the pics aren't great, I made a drop that was adjustable north, south, east & west. So, I could get the positioning of the steering wheel exactly where I wanted it & the dash was really independent of the whole works. That whole 1" square tube bracing thing enabled me to hang my pedals, as well. Just another idea.
