What model 1954 Dodge truck is it? There were two different models that used a three speed.

According to the Dodge Truck Service Manual, depending on the model, it should be either the 241 like nobo D said, or a 331. The 241 was fed fuel from the right (passenger) side. The 331 fuel pump was on the left from side of the block, and was not offered in the smaller trucks. Looks like yours is a 241.

The transmission was identified by the model of the truck and wheel base. Therefore it was either a C-1-B6, 108 Inch Wheel Base, or a C-1-B6, 116 Inch Wheel Base. Gear ratios were different between the two, as well as the gear oil capacity. They may have had subtle differences in their cases.

    That's a Stromberg WW-topped '57 - '66 318 Poly - and NOT the original motor for that '54 Dodge truck! :D

Other than the heads, exhaust, and intake (not to simply things too much), they're regular, old Small Block Mopars.

The '62 - '66 block bolts up to anything a Small Block Mopar does. The '57 - '62 block needs an Early Hemi adapter to do so.

Here's where to go for more info: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/318poly/

I just looked at a 65 Coronet with a 318 poly. Definitely in that family.

There's a following of the "A" Poly, including a cople of big fans. Use search. They can take a pretty good overbore. OEM 2X4 intakes are fairly cheap, but aftermarket 4 bl ones are big money. Covered in Tex Smith's Hemi book, though they are a different engine(nonconvertable).

  11. It is a 277,303, or a 318 with the raised truck water pump housing.

The 318 was Plymouth and Dodge's base V8 for family sedans and station wagons. After 1962 you couldn't even get a 4 barrel for it. Also used in millions of trucks.

They were a big heavy tough workhorse. 230HP, decent mileage, run forever with minimal upkeep.

There were some performance versions, 290HP with 2 4barrel carbs in 1957 and 58 (like Christine) but after 58, the big blocks took over the performance duties.

It should work well in your Chrysler. But you will probably want to change to a Torqueflite transmission at the same time. In that case you will want it to be newer than 1962 so you can use an easy to find transmission. Either a 904 3 speed Torqueflite or a later model overdrive.

If you do this you will need to change the rear axle in order to get a hand brake.

There are different possibilities. It might even be possible to adapt the 318 to your present transmission.

On further thought it would be possible to put the old 318 in your Chrysler and it would do a good job. But it would be easier and better to buy a 360 and automatic and a better rear axle.

The fact that the intake seals the valley makes it an A Poly.
