    Love this one!!

  11. '64-'65 Malibu/Chevelle's are one of my favorite Chevy models. Durham's white '64 is cool. It was later converted to the blue AWB '65. He built a modern version of the car in the 80's and his son will be match racing it at MIR's nostalgia race on 11/10/12.

    Keep the photos coming!!

64 under construction by a Southerngasser member. It's being converted from a bracket racer.

    Great pics.

I know it´s a photo thread but I sense there´s a lot of knowledge reading this so here goes...

I got a friend that has a '64 post. The previous owner claimed it was a original SS car and came originally with 396. Could you get a '64 post as a SS and with 396? Is there any way to confirm this?

396 was first available in '65, called the Z-16. 425 hp with a hydraulic cam. It wasn't available in any Chevy in '64.

Always liked that style Chevelle. There were 3 (new) '65s in the little 'burg (pop. around 250) I grew up in. A maroon 2drht, 283/glide, a dark green, 2drht, SS, 327/350, 4spd, and the coveted and rare, red Z-16. I remember the guy waiting a loooong time for delivery on the red one. Bet he wishes he still had it. :D

It was a gearhead mecca for such a small town. I've mentioned some of the 'other' hot iron in posts elsewhere. Paradise for a car obsessed kid on a bike in those times.

Seaton's Shaker was the pinnicale for me, as '65s go.

I don't think there were any "porquipines" installed in production cars until mid 1965. I know that the early 65 Impalas came with 409s and from mid 65 had 396s.

I agree with Larry. '65 was first yr I've seen 396 in prodution cars. Seen Corvette, and the Z-16 Chevelle mentioned earlier. Did see a '65 Impala 409 (4dr none the less!) but never saw a '65 Impala 396, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I'd call definite BS on the '64 post SS396 Chevelle. Don't mean someone couldn't have put one together (later), just not the factory.

I might be wrong, but the Chevelle version was 375 HP with a hydraulic cam. The 425 HP was the solid lifter Vette 396 in 1965.Later downrated to 375 HP in Novas and Camaros

I rebuilt a numbers matching 396 for a 65 Impala earlier this year, and I know where there is a one owner (lady owner got the car for high school graduation) 1965 Impala SS 396/4 speed car sitting in a garage about 5 miles from here.

You are correct, brainfart time here. It was 375hp. Same basic engine as the solid lifter engine but with hydraulic cam. In the fall on '65 I tried to talk my Dad into a '65 Caprice leftover. It was triple black with a 396 325hp. Settled for a SS with a 327.

I'm pretty sure the 375 HP (Chevelles) and 425 HP (Corvettes) were the same solid lifter, HiPo head engine. The difference in HP ratings were for the insurance companies. I think they were designated L-78, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

The 350/360 HP were the highest horspower hydraulic cammed 396s. They ran the standard oval port heads.

You are right Larry. I think the hp was rated at a differant rpm too, IIRC.
