Looking for disc brake kit for my 64 nova. I believe the axle is out a chevy van, not 100%. I've been looking everywhere with noa success and stumbled across this site. Looks very informative and helpful. Im also very excited about finding a gasser forum. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks jon

  8. Appears to be GM small van axle. The brake drum should be 9.5" diameter just like Chevy Camaro, and Malibu back in the late sixties early seventies.
Perhaps these people over at www.classicperform.com can help you with a disc brake kit.

Disk brake wise look at the pieces for a 72 Chevelle or 72 Monte Carlo. They had a fairly short front to back hub. The caliper bracket bolted on the spindle but that may not work on your spindle and you would have to come up with custom caliper brackets.

There is nothing straight about that axle - it's a dropped I beam.

    This is a straight axle....

I spoke with the original owner of the car and he said it was out of a c30 pickup. I guess he was off a little bit Haha..

I had the same problem. Turns out there's a guy; M1daido on the Vintage Chevy Van club web page (www.vcvc.org) that make a brkt kit to use off the shelf Disc Brake Rotors and Calipers. Very easy conversion with parts from local parts stores.

You might take a look at this web site www.vintage-van.com. They have a lot of info on converting a GM G Van axle to disc brakes using 1974 Nova components. I used them as a reference when I did my axle. Your axle looks to be the very similar. They used 1974 Nova disc brakes that used the same bearings as the van and did not require any modifications to the spindle. I made this conversion to my axle.

I contacted cpp and they are going to put a kit together for 300 bucks. Not a bad price for everything.

Thanks im going to check the van site out before ordering. Thanks for all the info fellas!!!

  20. I agree, it's an early '60s Chevy/GMC van. That's the only beam axle I can think of that has the 5 on 4 3/4" bolt pattern. Chevy/GMC pickups went to IFS in '60 and still had 6 lug wheels.
