Best all around...I think you need to define that first. Is it comfortable, fast, economical, cool looking, affordable, easy to get parts, spacious, compact???

well, the best all around car is the 49-51 merc soo, it would have to be one of them.

a 60's impala would do everything you want to do and be easy to maintain and not too high of a buy in price. i drive either my 57 chevy or my 50 merc to work every day. so really anything you want to drive will get the job done if you maintain it right.

I'm kinda partial to Fords and Mopars actually. I'm wanting something comfortable, where I can have it chopped but not have to worry about seeing stoplights or feel like I'm sitting on the ground. I'm not a welder at all, I'd love to learn but don't know anyone I can learn from so I'd really want something that's either already chopped or pretty easily chopped. Also something that is easy to swap more modern (i.e. V8) engines into, that I don't have to do a whole lot of fabrication. I'd really like to learn as I go but not get anything in which I'm over my head, because if I do that it'll never get done. The great thing is I live by myself and I'm single so it's not a question of getting the approval from the wife or anything like that

Get an old wagon with driver paint.

 

I think what you need is a "starter" cool car. I too, have no welding or bodywork skills, so I bought a car I would not have to chop or do much work on. I bought a fairly clean 60 Impala. I did not have to do much to get it running, and I get to enjoy cruising around in it right away. Sure I have plans to make it a mild custom, but I get to drive it as I figure out exactly what to do -and that has changed a bit since I bought it. I had plans to change the engine to a more modern V8 (for reliable cruising). I have owned it for over a year, and now realize the stock 283 is plenty reliable. So I am now just looking into getting the AC working again and fixing up the interior. Paint and bodywork can wait a while, while I figure out what I want to do.

Bottom line here is get something that is not a project because there will be plenty of things to keep your hands dirty for a while. As you learn the hobby, you won't be sinking a bunch of cash into a project just to get it ready to drive.

Since you are single you may have a decent amount of cash to drop, but don't. Look to spend about 10k on something that can drive right away. Have fun; fuck around with your ride;go to car shows and read the HAMB.

Don't be the guy with a potentially bad-ass ride sitting in your garage!

Narrow your choices to cars which have a lot of aftermarket part support.

Buy the paint! Find a rust free ride with decent paint, a little buffing can go a long way!

So, buy a Mopar with V8. Don't need to chop it, it's already low. Minimal changes required. If you want it lower crank down the torsion bars and put blocks in the back. Make things easy for yourself.
