  4. They were mentioned believe it or not in the lists of other bikes worth starting. Way back when sleezy riders actually featured a chopped guzzi once.

I have seen them bagged or stripped down, actually got past by one like I was standing still cruising across nebraska once, gawd knows how fast he was going I was grosley exeeding the speed limit myself. I will never forget the look on his face as he blew past, his eyes all squinted and this grimace somewhere between a smile and a smirk. I always figured that his wife was right behind him and he was going to get away come hell or high water.

The only theropy I can think of that would help is to pretend like it is new and not restored and hit it.

i'll be keeping mine stock , but i do have Guzzi frame. a 75, it's built like a brick shithouse. i'll likely find a guzzi or a BMW mill for it.

    You are soooo right, Benno.

  12. I'll give you a hint," Jerry Branch ", wheelies in 4 th gear too, ask me how I know!!

  13. As much as I like older beemers I would probably stay with the Guzzi mill for it. Seems like I recall in the later '70s or maybe it was early '80s that they were making a pretty hot sport mill.

    well i'll look around.

i hope i keep my sanity with this.. cause i was sizing up my 8ba and it looks
like it'd fit sideways.. thinking . belt drive to a jackshaft then chain to a
harley trany and chain to the rear...

but i realy ought find a guzzi to shove into it.

  16. We all seem to forget when we pour our heart and soul into anything that is was new once and if it is restored it is just new again. If it gets a little worn we were able to make it right the first time, right?

Cars bikes in that aspect they are all the same, if your heart is really in it and I believe that the majority of the fellas posting on this thread have their heart in it, it will call to you. I know it is an inanimate object but it exists for one thing and one thing only, to make you happy. The only thing that it knows is to go and that is what it needs to do to fulfill its reason for existence.

I come on here for pre-65 stuff, whether it be cars bikes or trucks. Not seen much evidence of that on this thread.
    Can we close it please?

This photo illustrates part of the reason why Ducati twins never really caught fire as flat trackers. While the 90 degree layout is GREAT for cancelling out vibration, because the front cylinder sticks almost straight out, the frame has to have more rake than is otherwise ideal in a flat-track frame. Either that, or you have to push the engine back. Neither solution is ideal for a flat tracker. The increased rake/trail is not as much of a handicap in road-racing.Still, if you look at the old Paul Smart Imola bike, it had a smaller diameter front wheel to try to quicken up the steering.
The singles had some success in the 250 classes in the hands of privateers, but under the old AMA rules, the Ducati was not a real good fit, as OHV engines were limited to 500cc's which is too big for the Ducati single. You would have to pretty much design a new engine, and Ducati was always primarily interested in road racing victories.

  25. Well gee paul I never owned a running hawg newer than '49. I did have a 66 shovel almost on the road when I left for mexico. But that doesn't count, motor cycles and cars are nothing like horse shoes.

But here is a well known picture from sometime in the early '80s, to try and get us back on track. And that is B-Ville under water so it is kind of traditional, in a way.

And here is a snap of Wilbur on his way to San Jose to give blood. Also a pretty old bike and it has an American magnesium wheel on the front so it is kind of like a traditional hot rod.

I'll admit that the thread is way OT and started with a simple question that turned into a who is the coolest and who knows the most 1%ers etc. A couple of the fellas actually are and they didn't bother getting into that part of the discussion for obvious reasons. But it has allowed us a little diversion, sometimes that is not so bad.

Actually my phone number is only a PM away and I am never farther than either.

Actually a little extra rake doesn't hurt you much on a long track, it really helps with stability on the stretches as long as you don't get stupid with it.

  26. Why bother reading let alone posting in this thread if it doesn't interest you? Asking to close it when it OBVIOUSLY is of great interest to many is self-centered and frankly, immature. Move on if it is of no interest to you! If you can't or don't want to contribute something of substance, then STFU. There are plenty of other threads for you, so go add something positive to one that interests YOU like campers or boats or any of the other sidelines in the HAMB.

  28. Easy, the misguided XR1000 of 1983-84. when they announced this bike it was supposed to be an XR750 for the street. But they dropped the ball big time in the styling department, and as such they sold miserably and went away after a year and a half. Instead of making it a standard Sportster with dual carbs, trick heads and flat track style pipes, they needed to fit XR750 style body work to complete the look (like the current XR1200's). Because of that the general riding public considered it a Sportster with funny looking carbs and pipes, bit having any idea what it was supposed to be. At $7,000 they were also way too expensive for the time. They only built about 1700 of them and you could find new ones languishing on dealers dhow room floors as long as 15 years later. They have now become collectible.
And no stocker ever did 4th gear wheelies, they only made 70 HP and weighed about 500 lbs.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of them, especially with XR750 body work, but let's not wear Rose Colored glasses either!

  29. Wow! You sound like my so-called alter ego that I have been accused of having.

Well wouldn't you know, since I made my comments people have started posting up stuff that is on topic and that I am interested in. I first opened the thread because I thought it would be of interest me and then it meandered and wound up way off topic. If they weren't all up in the attic I would post pictures of my 55 Royal Enfield, my old 60 BSA or the 62 triumph Tiger Cub my wife still uses to get around town. We were (and still are at the heart) rockers. I don't have a lot of time for campers or boats. My apologies.
