Looking to shave/mold my quarter extensions due to bad chrome pitting/peeling and the ones I find are in the same shape. The housings are potmetal and want to permanantely mate them to the quarter panels. Any advice on how to correctly do this and not have it crack down the road? Ive heard pre heat the cast and use flux wire. Ive also been told to use duraglass.
    Thanks in advance!

  2. what is this part that is cast? as in cast iron? or is the some body panel/molding that is pot metal?

  3. Probably Potmetal, which is mostly Zinc.
Should be able to Solder them in place.

    interesting...how about lead?

  9. I cannot be done. Anything you try will either destroy the part or crack in short order

In order to get solder to adhere to pot metal you have to first copper plate the potmetal.
I know because I have done it. Very expensive.
Duraglass is the better way to go. Use Dura glass first and apply bondo over it so as to make it "feather in" easier. Here's some info.

I would just paint them and bolt them on. That way you will have a nice clean crack. Any other way will cause random cracks.

  12. Any Bondo, plastic filler, Duroglass or other mud will crack eventually and destroy your paint job. Moisture will get in from the back and wreak havoc as well. Either get them rechromed, paint them body color or live with them. It looks like a nice old car, don't booger it up with Mickey Mouse repairs

there is one locally done atleast 12 years ago and hasnt cracked, yet. Unfortuneately the guy who did it passed away. His son owns the car and is unsure of how it was done.
May have to go with the painted route. Or atleast try and duplicate the housing out of sheetmetal which could be a pain.
    Thanks guys!
