Hi guys! I tried to use a 1956 265 oil pan on my 1955 265, BUT, what?, humm... there is a different polt pattern near the bellhousing side- just one bolt! I realy thought that at least the oilpan should fit..? Please help me with info. Thank you!
The HOllanders manual (that salvage yards use to see what parts interchange) says that the 55 oil pan is one year only...sorry
55: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1326406,parttype,5436 56: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1326305,parttype,5436 same gaskets, I guess.
I don't know what you are up against. But I wanted to put a '51 rear sump pan on a '57 392 Chrysler. But two holes in the front were different because of the different front covers between early and later hemis. So I grabbed my drill motor. Problem solved. Maybe that would work on a Chevy.
Unfortunately, on the 1955 265 (only year) because they did not have a cast-in-the-block oil filter, the pan was shaped differently in the area where on the rest of the SBC's, there is the oil filter "pad". The pan gasket is also different for that reason. On the 1955 265 the blow by tube also exits the block in this area. Also of note is that the 1955 V-8 intake manifolds are different because the water temperature sending unit is in the left rear if the intake, instead of in the front. The same intake also has the hole for the oil return line, with the optional external oil filter, drilled in the right side of the intake; did'nt order the oil filter as an option, the hole was plugged with a pipe fitting. The 55 265's, 56 2 and SINGLE 4 barrel 265's, and the 57 265's all used small port heads, and intakes with smaller runners. 1955 used oil pans bring a good $$$. We all know about the odd ball oiling of the 265, so we won't discuss that, right? Butch/56sedandelivery.
