Talking Pikes Peak,John Riggens, The guy I got the Vel's, Heath sprinter from, drove it at Pikes Peak, not sure of years but he is putting together photos and more info for me.

Interesting read on Crocky. Sad that today, the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame's website is down and has been for some time. Anyone know when it might be back up and running?

 

First, I would like to say what an outstanding thread you guys have put together. I have been reading through it start to finish since Christmas and I am just getting to the end.
Your combined knowledge and expertise is truly astounding.
I have been researching racing in the southern tier of New York and have stuff I look forward to sharing with you...I just have to find the time.
I went to the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen to eyeball a Watson Indycar. It was built for Joe Hunt in 1960 by Wayne "Fat Boy" Ewing at the Watson shop. It was driven by Al Herman, the 1955 Indy Rookie of the Year.
On Saturday, August 25, noted Indainapolis Motor Speedway historian Donald Davidson will be at the Research Center. It is at 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to all.

Don't think the Unsers get rid of too much of their stuff. A few years ago there was a Concours show at the Broadmoor hotel here and Bobby and Al brought up a bunch of their cars from their museum.

 

The Unser car is the first one I have seen on here with SU carburrettors!!
Here is one of mine,the Abicair Bros Special with our equivalent of a Chev stovebolt six in it.
Ran from 1953 onwards on dirt, asphalt ,hillclimb and sprint.
Its been with me 38 years and still going strong

Who won? Good ole winter! The meeting was snowed out, and postponed to April 17. Hinnershitz took the match race, and A. J. the main event.

When my dad took me to my first sprint car race in 1953, he told me to watch that blue car of Tommy Hinnershitz. He said Tommy was the best, but he said his favorite use to be Joie Chitwood. By that time Chitwood had quit racing and I only knew him as the stunt car driver from his thrill show.

Nice photos... I forgot about this event and wanted to be there. The only thing I did last weekend was cut my grass.

 

Seeing that photo of Tommy reminds me of the time we went to Reading for the opening Sprint Car race - could be 1952, maybe? Anyway, as usual, and like all the other fans that day, we were at track side checking out the cars with their new paint jobs & numbers. Dad said he thought it was time we went up to our seats, since some cars were on the track, warming up. We no longer sit down and here come Tommy, down the front stretch, wide open. Next thing you know, he's sideways, wide open, and those knobbies are really throwing the dirt. A bunch of fans were still track side, noses up against the fence, with no idea, whatsoever, that Tommy was on his way. Talk about getting a face full of dirt! Dad was smart!

The SAC Fireboid; not really intended to be a actual race car, in that configuration, but more of a promotional/recruitment showpiece that Curtis LeMay came up with. Got lots of ink and ballyhoo in the car mags. of the time though. Story goes that, while on display at the 55 Indy 500, Jack Zink took particular interest in the concept and is what planted the seeds of his own turbine effort to come several years later.

 

Hi Bill: My buddy Tony Gullatta owns the Trevis sprinter you and your Dad campaigned back in the day. He bought it from Tommy Kothera, after Tom had made some changes for vintage racing, mainly installing a V-6 Chevy and Powerglide. Unfortunately, Tommy got ill and had to sell the car and we need some info on it. Hope you can help..You guys were famous for the Ford powerplants. Can you tell us which engines were used to race? I remember the car racing at Sandusky and talking to your Dad about it, but that was some time ago. I was sorry to hear that he passed away. Our deep condolences to you and your family.

We would like to know more about the car, which Ford engines were used and any other info. The chassis remains untouched. TK didn't chop it up to take the Chevy. The frame was dipped and blasted. All the body panels are in great shape. Anyone else is welcome to add any info on the Zipay Trevis #3/
