I think the 347 GMC V8 was a Pontiac motor in the late 70's had a 56 GMC cameo version & I thought I was told it was basicky a Pontiac.
GMC Red... Close to a Ford Red.. bit more orange... Also was told Napa has a Chevy red orange they sell is close...
I have a 347 from a 57 GMC in my modified. Couldn't find any mention of a tripower option in any of the research I did. My engine is painted Pontiac blue with no trace of red. I guess it could have been hot tanked at some time though.
It's a bright red, buddy has a '56 GMC with some original paint on the motor, I think GMC used it through the '60s. Even the red in those plaid valve covers is about the same. A 1958-60 tri-power would bolt right on a 347; most light to medium duty GMC trucks with a V8 had a Pontiac engine, including a GMC only variant at 331 CID starting in 1958. I've heard of Buick and Olds motors in some of the heavier trucks. All were replaced when the 305 gas V6 came to be.
We have two 347's for the '57 GMC sitting in our yard. Someone replaced it with a 350 years ago, before it came to us, but i think the previous owner gave us pics that may still be in the glovebox showing the 347 in what looks like a dark Chevy red if I'm remembering correctly. The 347's we have are both out of cars and are Pontiac blue.
it could or would have been a simple dealer install at a Pontiac/ GMC dealer if ever requested. I know my buddy had a 270 horse 57 chev Bel Aire with a dealer installed 4 speed. those kind of requests were common in the 50's
Wrong info. The GMC version was called the Suburban. The Palomino was a one of a kind that was made for the show circuit.

The second multi-carbureted motor Pontiac offered was the '57 with the tri-power. The first was the '56 317 with a special order performance package that included dual quads, a high performance head, cam and valve train. Pontiac was already into the NASCAR type performance and John DeLorean was already at their helm for the performance shop. BUT... he was told to not build anything larger in displacement than the Chevrolet performance cars. He had already introduced the 347 and then in '58 Chevy showed up with their 348 tri-power too. If you look at what Pontiac was doing then use your search engine and enter Pontiac performance 1957. It should take you to some interesting GM history about Division rivalries. In those days most Divisions had their own specific power plants. The GMC truck V-8's were a Pontiac derivative and the 55-57 Chevy big trucks were using Buick nail head V-8's too.
