I picked up a '56 Chevy project that needs the whole pedal assembly and need the straight scoop on what the differences are year to year.

I have been told 55-56 are the same and 57 is different, but I've also been told all three years are the same.

What's the scoop, Chevy guys? What will work in my '56? :)

brake and clutch pedals are the same all years. I can't find the group number for the brace thing that holds it all in place, and ties the lower edge of the dash to the firewall. It might be different on the 57, since the dash was different.

The swing pedal assembly is the same for all 3 years. Now if you need the clutch related parts as well, thats where it gets confusing. 55 has a smaller bellcrank than 56 and 57. The rod from the pedal to the bellcrank are year only.

Good point, but I think it's only the braceing rods that go to the firewall from the pedal assembly that are differant.

This is correct. However, You can use 57 clutch linkage, throw out fork, bellcrank, etc. in a 55 or 56, as long as all of the 57 parts are used. This is what I did with my 55, since the 57 parts appear to be stronger/heavier than the 55's.

The 57 Brace Assembly is part 3741196 which is different to the 55-56 Brace Assembly part 3725308.

Clutch pedal spring components(under dash) are DIFFERENT on 57. Check the "assembly" manuals for differences. Here's the 57. Been there.

    Okay, that's great to hear!

All three years clusters will bolt in, but the 1957 clutch pedal spring is different than the 1955/1956?

Thanks again guys, you can't be beat!

Hold on there!!!. After seeing that pic, the mounting bracket for the column is differant as well and will not allow your column to go in correctly.

Be very careful with the clutch pedal spring on all three years. It will bite you big time.

That's a good idea Ricky!! I'm running a 5 sp in my 51 chevy coupe! Wonder if it'd work?

  22. I used a 56 assembly in my 55 which was an automatic car when I got it. It was a bolt in.
