Well...one pic really tells the whole story....

This little engine has been bullet proof for a bazillion miles with a shit load of dragstrip passes and waaaay too many rpms, so it is no fault of hers. I had a feeling she was hurt on the last pass, but she still limped all the way home so what more could I ever ask?

Here is the day I put her together. My kid in the pic is now in high school...

Now, I'm off to the machine shop with a new crank and get a fresh hone job on the block then I'm gonna stick her back together like she was untill next winter when she gets her new Total World Domination Pontiac Engine Of Death. But untill then, she sits for a few weeks...

Still the best HAMB Drags ever.

    See ya, -Abone.

  2. Ah hell just pin it and put a splint on it until it heals. I thought you maybe in trouble when I saw you dumping that load of pop in it. :D

At least its a crank and hone job and nothing more my friend. I may want to take a real close look at the main caps but you already know that.

Well, that'll tend to make a rattling noise.

Hope to see you on the road again soon!

  7. Damn you work fast man! You really don't want to drive that truck do you.

    Glad it wasn't more catastrophic.

We need to put some filings from that crank inside the Yay-Hoo Cup... like, forever.

  9. If someone will send me the broken pieces or some pieces of the broken pieces I will make something up for the fastest broken one, it can be passsed from year to year as well. Each year or each break it can grow.

Wait a second... Didn't you let Kevin drive that thing to get food on Saturday night/Sunday morning? That bastard is responsible for this... I just know it!

I almost just texted DW to ask if he'd seen ABONE's crank... then better judgment prevailed.

I had a steel 283 crank break just like that, threw the front crank pully off the motor and I saw it fly off the side of the road, cracked the block journal too

Im supprized you block isnt history too

Ahhh, no problem. Ya can probably weld that up and run it a few more years.....well maybe not. Been there and done that, on the + side of things, the crank didn't come out thru the pan.

  18. You don't mess around, that's really broke.

Hopefully it's fixible until the world domination motor goes together.

Boy, that really says a lot about the toughness of American V8 motors. Crank split in half and it still (sort of) ran. Glad you think the block is savable .

  20. Wait, when you say "limped all the way home" does that mean you drove it home to SC like that??

I bought a real nice white '54 Ford Customline Coupe with a broken crank (1967, Canoga Park, CA) and drove it 4 miles up Vanowen St. home...
Made more noise than a jackass in a tin barn, but the cross break at the throw kept it turning by 'interference'...

Say, do you know what caused that breakage? Just don't have the same guy turn the rod journals on the next one...

  23. Sound advice, hope all it needs is a line-hone. And splurge for new internal hardware!

It looks like a fatigue crack that started out in the rod journal fillet a while ago, and worked its way a little deeper on every power stroke, until there was not enough left to hold on any longer.

yeah, too small fillet radiuses, or corners, or steps can let a crack get started.

Any chance it was welded at the last re-grind?
