Just bought a '56 ply with a 6cyl motor are they 6v or 12 v . can't find any tags that say what it is ie. gen. ect Ron:eek:

  2. Look at the battery - 3 caps = 6 volts, 6 caps = 12 v

pretty sure they were 6v positive ground

56 is the first year for 12v neg ground on mopars.

  4. The starters and generators that are 12v had green tags and the 6v had red tags, at least mine do.

 I too have a 56 Plymouth, and as others have said it is a 12 volt system, with green tags on the starter and generater. I am currently in the process of switching my 6cyl over to a 270 Red Ram poly from a 56 dodge. My six was incorrectly rebuilt by the previous owner, causing some damage, so I decided to switch her over now instead of later. I think you will lover your Savoy.

I have used 4 caps = 8 volt. Not sure, if that is
the first year of 12 Volt & Neg. Ground.
