Here are some old pics I took one day at OCIR in Aug of 72 nothing too exciting but to someone else they may dig it. Not the best quality but I was a dumb kid.
Fun stuff back then, anyone remember the Subaru obstacle course setup back about that time? Give u a helmet and u got to drive a Subaru 360 with roll cage over the track for a meesly $5. What a deal! They all ended up stacked on top of each other at a junkyard on 2nd street in Santa Ana.
Great pics. I only wish I had brought a camera to the drags when I was a kid. The problem with being young I guess is thinkin' times will never change. I never worried much about takin' pictures. Sure wish I did though.
I think your pictures are just fine. My old ones really suck. Hard to believe they ran 64 Funny Cars at one time, now its gone.
Yes I agree, I to have no pictures, like you said when your young you think that stuff will be their forever.....not so. I still don't take many pictures
Man, I spent every Saturday down there from age 3 until 10 (I think), my dad had a Greyhound at a storage lot on the otherside of that fence by the trap, took that same frontage road the cars would roll into in..at 6 I was escaping working on the bus and pushing the broken boards aside to sit and watch the cars speed through. By the way, anyone remember Leeroy LaPerle, used to run a Vette among others there?
I was spying some of the cars behind the cuda, and it looks like maybe a Vega might run against a Pinto! Thanks for the pics, fun to look at!
Now thats was some real fun times. Had a 66 chevell ss396 bored out to 440ci running on alky. Had that car guarged at the shop i was working at so my parents would not now about the car or racing. I would take 2 m22 with me as i know i would blow atleat 1 of them. Thanks for sparking the memerory. Rick erickson
Man! Some great pix there..... THANKS! I spent a lot of Wednesday nights there grudge racing everything I owned.
I did worse than you guys...had a whole pile of old Brownie Hawkeye picts, and lost them in a move years ago...San Gabriel, San Fernando, Santa Ana, etc... OCIR was a great place, and thanks for posting the pictures...I have heard that the pit area is still there, but most is an office park...the land was apparently too valuable to use for drag racing, so another track bit the dust.
There was an old street driven Willys Gasser truck with a 427 still around SoCal - could be the same one. I last saw it in Orange ca 2000, but it may now be in the San Diego area with a new blue paint job.
Cool Pic's I went to the Hang 10 funny car 500 a few months earlier and the only pictures are in my mind I do remember the Henry J real well It had a 6 cyc.
Some of my work buddies and I ran a 340 duster at ocir , from 70 thru late 70's. Mind looeses time. Ran up and down the valley, pictures at the winter home, loved the time. Owned and driven by Bob Lee the devil wind
Part1= I too, was there as a spectator and racer. It was fun going to OCIR (1967-1983)! The East vs West Funny Cars, The PDA Meet, Super Chevy Sunday (original), The Bug Ins, All Corvette Meets, The First Pro Gas Meets, Wednesday Nights Grudge Racing and then going to original Irwindale Raceway and Lions Drag Strip on the other weekends. Yep.
