I would think you are probably right, but cooler? Never! NOTHING says fifties hot rod like a top shift cad/lasalle. Man, thats got more sex appeal than a horne 4x2. Let us know how long it takes for the big cad and your big right foot to make it say uncle. Blown top shift ford boxes are traditional.:D Personally, I am scared of the little ford toploaders. I tend to drive pretty aggressively, got a hunch I would spend a lot of time on my back with gear lube dribbling in my face if I tried to run one behind an overhead, even with "period" tires. I will be curious to see if it pans out for you. Subscribed.

I should add, I have no experience whatsoever with early ford drive-train parts, so I am basing this strictly on hearsay and what I have been told, not first-hand experience, so take it for what its worth. I'll be watching to see what happens.

Evel, I have had to deal with the same decision. Spent almost 3 grand total getting a Lasalle trans, hunting down a stock Cadillac bellhousing, a NOS Hurst Mystery shifter, getting all the machining done to fit a torque tube - and then realize I will have to cut into my 33 Ford frame to get it to fit. Yes, beyond stupid....so I went back to my original plan of using a 39 Ford toploader.
Now I have an expensive trans that sits on the floor in my parts room and people ask "what's that?" Maybe I will use it someday on another project, who knows....

    yikes!

maybe I should do up some 37 Buick transmission setups as closed drives; I was planning on all open drives with cad or olds bells/flywheels....for a lot less;)

Yeah man thats where it was heading with the La Salle and I sure as hell don't have that kind of dough.. As awesome as it is... It's not in the cards...

I did end up selling the La Salle and it coverd the cost of the Ford trans so it all worked out.. it only took 3 years... :D

Glad to hear it worked out! At least, you don't have a trans to trip over like I do....

I watched the build of this car on a DVD on the way to the Detroit Autorama a couple years ago and was wondering why it was not preassembled and driven to get the bugs out of the mechanicals before it was finished,I done that once and will never again.

  24. Got the same transmission behind a 324 Olds. It works well. Treat it with just a little respect and it will do what you want it to.

Grab some large sheets of cardboard from a body shop to lay, slide, kneel ect. Makes that task a little easier.
