    Good Morning,
Im getting closer to finishing my T-Bucket build and in order for it to be drivable I have to get it inspected. One of the requirements is front and rear fenders... on the Connecticut DOT site it states..

    FENDERS
    - Fenders are required over front and rear tires. Front and rear fenders must come at least half way down the rear of the tire, to the center of the axle and must start at a line directly above the axle, or be equipped with suitable mud flaps and all fenders must cover entire tread width of the tire.

I would like to put fenders on temporarily just for the inspection. Are there any inexpensive ways to temporarily put fenders on? Should I just get some sheet metal and bend it up?? Any tips and pictures will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    J

As A CT resident, I am going to assume you are going to register this car as a "composite" or kit car build? Those builds are the only hobbiest type cars that "need" to be inspected by DMV at the main inspection station in Weathersfield, CT.

If there is any way you can avoid going for a "new build", you should think about that. A new build will need a lot things to be addressed besides something like fenders.

Most old builds with simple fenders had brackets welded or bolted to the brake backing plates. I'd bet you have disc fronts, so you may not be able to find a simple way to bolt something up.

Best to put up pics showing the front and rear brake areas so someone can get an idea on how to fit them.

A lot of the old cycle fenders came from those metal spare tire covers. You can get two fenders out of one cover. They're still around...check here & Ebay. That being said, I'm not quite sure how you'd get away with taking them off (after inspection). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd tend to think that the state cops would be aware of what's legal & what's not. Good luck with it, though.

  4. I have a pair of fenders you may be able to use. Will need brackets. What town are you in? So far I have not had any issues running no fenders but F&J is correct as far as registering. My car was on a trailer and not running when I registered it. But composits will need inspections. Good Luck and keep us posted.

I am going to have to register it as a composite, I plan on complying with all the other regulations, I have the entire list of requirements that they look for..
I read something on the website that if you have a car that closely resembles a certain year/make than you can register it as one of those.. I have a '23 body, but im not sure what the rules on going that route are.
I do have have disc brakes in the front, and I might be able to hack up a bracket of some sort, Ill have to post some pictures.
Ive talked to a few guys with t buckets that have no fenders, and they said they havent had any issues with the cops.. plus I know a few Staties that might be able to help me out if I have an issue.

  7. I would put an original vin# on it and take a shot as registering it as a 23. Has alot of benifits.
I did a model A years ago, I just picked a number in the original numbers range and kept my fingers crossed that it was not in use. With a 1923 I would say the odds are in your favor.:D

Thats a great idea, would I have to show a bill of sale? I could probably fudge one, I guess..

  9. That is the easy part. Make sure it has the vin # on it. I am sure you bought the body from someone:cool:

The Model T ford had ONE number when it left the factory, the number was stamped on the block.

I welded tabs on my backing plates for brackets to mount trailer fenders on the back of mine, and drilled and tapped the caliper brackets on the front for homemade fenders. About a week after the inspection, they "fell off". Law enforcement officers have never given me any trouble.

Model T Ford had 2 numbers. One was stamped into the frame under the floor boards if I remember right it was on the top right side of the center cross member. The same number was repeated on the engine. Both were hand stamped and not very neatly at that. Fords replacement engines were supplied with a blank number pad the installer was expected to transfer the chassis number to the new replacement engine this pratice extended into atleast the model A era possibly later. I have seen both model T and A engines in cars without the motor numbers stamped in.

Oh my god, that's bad advice...

Care is O/T- but still relevant to VIN#s and legit registration in general.

42 years after this car was stolen, it was recovered.

VIN tampering is illegal, like everywhere. So do it right or risk losing your ride man.

This site is publicly viewable. Forging a VIN is a crime in most states. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you for all of the advice, I think I will stay away from the life of crime, Ill just have to bite the bullet and do things the "right" way to get the car through inspections.
