So I have a chance to buy a damn nice center console and a set of bucket seats for a 64 galaxie that I am trying to get parts gathered for. The problem Is I want to use a 4 speed and the console is for an automatic. Is this interchangable? Anything I should know before I get into this deal and shoot myself in the foot?? And lastly, what 4 speed does it take? This car is GUTTED and I have no idea what it is supposed to have in it. I recently scored a 390 FE. Does the truck bellhousing fit the car trans and what trans??? Sorry for all the questions. I just want it done right!

4 speed and auto trans "plate" will interchange, but not the same. It was factory with a T-10. Not sure of the bell housing difference between car and truck, and its raining like a mother or I would get the part# for you....

the console is the same but the plates are different. If you are not worried with being correct I would make a plate. I sold a 4 speed console top several years ago for $200 and it was in fair to better condition. Good luck

A friend bought a 64 427 4 speed back aound 67/8. It was bench seat though. The shifter was round shaft, chrome, bent a bit with the lift trigger like Gm factory did. I don't recall the knob color.

I am fairly sure it was the T10 with the tall skinny trans pattern that is the same as 49-up Ford 3 speed. I think I read that those T10s were used on the early big car 4 speeds, and maybe the first few 64-1/2 Mustangs?

The top you have I've been looking for now about two years.(last piece I need to finish the car) Buy the console and sell me the top. The car should have had a 390 with a t-10 trans. When buying be aware of the t-10 could have a wide or narrow bolt pattern, which isn't a big deal until you try to find the bell housing. The wide pattern is easier to find. PM me and I will call you about the console cover.

The console from a Fairlane Sports Coupe is basically the same, too- and mine had a blank top, as it had a column shifter. I made a Hurst shifter that came out of a '70 428CJ Mach1 work with the Gal console by cutting the dogleg out of the Mustang shifter and welding it back together, and with a straight stick (can't believe I said that in this crowd ) it fit the console perfectly. Had to tinker with the shift rods a bit too, but not too bad
My XL 406 car has a black 4-spd console, and the XL Sunliner ragtop has a blood red auto console

Ford used a T-10 behind the 390 in 64. I have a complete running 64 with 390 4bbl & factory 4 speed. It is for sale, PM me if interested. All the parts you need to convert to a 4 speed.

Ford used BOTH the T-10 and Toploader, in 64.

Yes, my mid year '64 390 Galaxie had top loader, while my early '64 427 had a T-10.
