    Hey All,

It's been a while since I have had to turn a wrench. But my son, about to turn 16, is into ratrods and for his birthday we got him a '51 Plymouth Cranbrook. Now I am stoked, it needs a lot of work but I am jealous to get something for myself!
Anyway I have no personal experience with Plymouth Flatheads or 6 Volt electrical so any and all advice/help is welcomed. Starting with a good place to find parts...I plan to start combing through swap meets. If you know of any good ones in the L.A. area or any good online resources pass the info on any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tony

Good to have you on board Tony and enjoy the Hamb. (just a heads up, quickly use the edit button and remove the RR word in the second sentence) Anyway, welcome from the Netherlands!

Hi, I too am a 51 Plymouth guy from LA and have been for 4 yrs. I go to all the pomona and long beach swapmeets but honesly rarely find Plymouth parts. All the maintenance parts though I can get through Napa auto parts. Or other local parts places. But if you need cosmetic items good luck!

Have fun , Mike from Glendale, CA

FYI you are welcome to ask me for any parts you may need. I have some extra cores , brakes, carbs, coils etc. I won't be using these items so I would be happy to donate to your cause or sell dirt cheap to free space. 8183709168 is my cell. Have fun Mike

those three are a good start depending on what you need. Also search ebay, you'll find some good stuff sometimes.

    Lucky son you got there!
My dad thought I was nuts when I was taking a car apart in his garage at 16, and well, he was right of course.

    Welcome.

If you are going to keep the flathead you need to check out the P15-D24 forum http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/index.php?referrerid=1152 there is a ton of flathead Mopar knowledge over there. While it is geared specifically to the 46 - early 49 models most of your mechanicals are pretty much the same. There are also several members who have the early 50's models that may be able to help with parts.

Also check out Oldaddy here on the HAMB, his website is http://rustyhope.com/. He produces a basically bolt on front disc brake kit for these cars. I have one on my 48 Plymouth Coupe and it made a huge difference in stopping. Took about a day to install at a cost of about $550.

Regular rebuild or maintenance parts for the flatheads are readily available from NAPA or any of the major parts stores. If you want something to add a little punch to the flathead take a look at Edgy Speed Shop http://edgyspeedshop.com/ , Langdons Stovebolts http://stoveboltengineco.com/, Moose here on the HAMB at http://www.manifoldsbymoose.com/manifoldsbymoose/D-P_Combos.html.

I would also suggest you look into finding an R10 Over Drive transmission or going to a T5 5 speed from an S10 pickup. Paul Curtis http://home.comcast.net/~tcbass/t5.html sells and adaptor for the T5 install. Either would allow the flathead to run 70 mph all day without strain. Otherwise running with freeway traffic will cause to flathead to scream at you a bit.

The flatheads can be cool and stand out from the standard V8 swap you see in a lot of cars at the shows. Look at http://50plymouth.com/, BloodyKnuckles 51 Plymouth http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=231864 and http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=33986.

Good luck and good to see another old Mopar coming back to life.

    Welcome from Alabamoe,
(oh and as others have noted, rr is a dirty word both on here and to the general public (it implies a laziness in proper construction and a poor attitude toward detail/work ethics))
