Sold my 427 Comet to a fellow in Philly. Had a little cash and traced down my 40 ford coupe I had sold in 1978. I first built in in 1972, total frame off in 1976. been sitting in a garage for 34 years. last time it saw daylight was 3 years ago and that was to wash it and push back in. met with the owner and finally made a deal to buy it back. still in good shape considering sitting for so long. tires almost flat, brakes gone, no hyd clutch, etc. paint is still good and interior is perfect. still can't figure why he took the a/c out, but he kept it all. going to clean it up, get it safe and drive it. here's a couple of pict of it that I took as we pushed it out of the garage. the wind was blowing so some of the dirt is off but you can get the idea of how dirty it is/was. one week update. working on the brakes completely corroded and all will have to be replaced, tires look good for now, no weather cracks, t-10 leaked most of the oil out, 9" was overfull about a pint. exhaust is total rusted out except for the fenderwell header that are in good shape. took the 2- 4;s off the motor but the 327 fired after about 3 turns. shut it down to fix leaks and some mickey mouse brackets that were put on when the a/c was taken out. believe the paint will polish up good for it's age. wheels look good. here's what it looked like when I sold it in 1978 gonna put back on street just as it was in 1978 and take the grandkids to some cruises and car shows. alan
Cool deal, it must feel like the last 34 years had just disappeared when you sat behind the wheel again.
Very Lucky! Both that you could find it and that it was almost as it was! For everytime I almost sold my 40 I was glad everytime after, so 32 years later a bit worn but still in my yard.
Thats really cool. That was a really nice car back in its day. Its really nice for today too. Please post updates!
It would only be cooler if your brother (me) had found it first. Hah, just joking. Congratulations again, Alan.
remember, I got you started way back when in this very inexpensive hobby. the duece came after my 40. your duece story is similar to mine, got it, built it, sold it, sat in a garage for 25+ years, bought it back and now it's on the road again. same as what is going to be done with the 40. maybe paint and frame off later, but just enjoy it again. my 2 grandsons are fighting over which one gets the 40 and which one gets the 55. ain't life grand?
Wish I could find my old car, 1939 Ford Coupe. Unfortunately it was made into a dirt track car and is no longer in existence. Congratulations on the find and the shape it is in. If it was perfect it wouldn't be fun right! Bill
Yes we really are! Same parents by golly. I just happened to migrate from Amarillo to Denver in the 80's. And to give credit where credit is due, Alan and his friends who loved hot rods made me transition over time from the world of sports to the fun of motorsports. They were nice enough to drag Alan's lttle brother with them out to the Amarillo Dragway to see all of the famous racers as they criss crossed Route 66 and stopped in Amarillo.
I love those western wheels, got a full set, had them twenty years or more, building a 29 chrysler around them these days. Nice forty.
