So I need to decide on what color to paint my wifes BBC thats going into her '62 Altered Wheelbase Nova.
I know these cars were kinda to promote manufactures. So Chevy Orange would be appropriate. But was factory color the "norm" for these cars?

Chevy engines were mostly orange from mid 50s to the mid 70s.

It depends a lot on the rest of the car and how it is trimmed out.

It could look good in gloss black, metallic gold or silver, white or bright red in addition to the factory Chevy orange.

I would go funky like Yellow or gold somethink to make it pop offthe red and silver, are you lettering or striping the car? Do it to match that. Gasser arent traditonal Cars so why go with a traditonal color

It would be faster if you painted it ford blue.

VERY FUNNY ...... I have always painted the engine in my cars traditional "Chevy Orange"..... for the first time I am considering painting the SBC that is going into the Opel "SHINNY BLACK"

These cars were built just as the big block chevy came out, so most were still orange with stock valve covers and very little dress up items.

  11. Ha, I have always painted my engines black. I just recently painted some chevy orange on an engine in an old engne swap because I wanted it to look just like it did when they swapped it.

Looks like we are trading places.

As for the engine in the Nova if it had lots of glitzy stuff I would paint it black, if it has lots of stock lookin stuff I would paint it orange.

Gold was a custom color back then.

I've painted a lot of them black over the past 20 years, that way they don't leak (this is a big drawback to painting a Chevy engine orange, they turn black all by themselves). I'm probably going back to orange again on the next one.

  15. Well the orange is growing on me a bit. Always good to know where the oil is going. ;)

Either shiney black or flat black. Easier to keep clean and not take away from the rest of the car.

As squirrel says black is good to hid leaks and you know what they say about Chevy engines. I wanted mine to pop so gold it is.

I hate chevy orange. It seldom looks right imho. The 56 I'm finisheing has an orange engine and I think it looks dorky.

Red looks good, Black or navy blue look great and hide oil leaks. I just painted the engine in the Fairlane metalic blue with black accents. It's getting some chrome in there too.

The altered WB Nova is a period build, so orange would be more"correct". great looking car

Yes its going to be lettered. I like that idea.
The prob is is a Dart Big M 540 with Brodix heads. Ive got correct MT valve covers, Weiand Intake,EELCO,timing cover,GM 6-71 and Hilborn Injection 4 port. But I want to kinda "hide" the fact its a 540,so I was thinking painting it orange.

Gotta be the craziest- bitchinest build on the West Coast!! Followed your build. Insane! That being said, with all the detail you put in your build, any color will be a homerun!

I'd love to see this car in person some day.
