Just to give anyone that might be interested, a head's up....... I had a '36 Ford rear fender for sale on Craig's List. I didn't list it on HAMB because I figured the shipping would be astronomical. I got a call from a guy (a HAMBer as it turned out!) in California (I'm in NY) who really wanted it and convinced me to ship via Greyhound. I'd never used them before, but agreed to do it, with no guarantees. My wife & I spent a few hours constructing & reinforcing a box and packing it up as carefully as we could. When we were done, I took the weight & measurements and checked Fed-Ex & UPS online. They wanted around $220.00 to ship it. The Greyhound website was down, so I went down to their terminal and the extremely courteous rep said it would be $67.60, which included insurance !! That was on May 25th. I got a call from the Buyer today and he said he got the fender a day or two ago and it arrived in great shape! Let's see....about 1/4 of Fed-Ex & UPS's price and it got there in a week or slightly less in good condition. They made a believer out of me and, no, I have no vested interest in Greyhound, except as a future customer.
I had a bit of a different experience... Had some big parts shipped from Texas to CT, Galaxie bumpers and brackets. The price was right. Since I'm from a small town, the nearest terminal was Southbury so I had them shipped there. There are no tracking numbers, or tracking system for parts shipped general freight, and if they need the space for passenger luggage, the parts get dropped off wherever, to be picked up at a future time, whenever there is room. I waited 10 days for the parts to arrive before I started calling customer service and the Southbury terminal. Was told that there was nothing they could do to help me, not to worry. After almost two weeks, I got a call from Waterbury to tell me that one of my bumpers was there, not in Southbury. I went to get it, asked the guy why it was delivered here instead of Southbury. He told me that Southbury was too small of a terminal (basically it was a gas station/convenience store) and they didn't deliver big stuff there. Again, he had no idea where the other bumper was and couldn't track it. After a few days more (probably a week) and some anxious thoughts, I called both Waterbury and Southbury....the bumper was in Southbury and, according to the wizard that answered the phone, had been there a couple days, he had no idea why I wasn't called. It had a happy ending, but the seller was going nuts because they took so long, I wasn't all that happy with the unknown status. It worked, but personally I would hesitate to ship without a tracking system, just my preference. Bill
I have had 3 good experiences shipping via greyhound. 1 as a buyer, 2 as a seller. I try and use them for everything Sent from my iPhone using TJJ app
I shipped a pair of used 40 chevy front fenders from Pennsylvania to Flagstaff Arizona for 72.00.. I duct taped them together and dropped them off at the local Greyhound station. They will only insure for $300 max. so I got the insurance(included in the $72.00). They arrived in fine condition and the buyer was happy.
HA! I shipped a front fender for a 40 Ford Pickup on Greyhound and NO ONE has found it YET...been two years! HA!!!!!!! Glad you guys have had a great experience.....I don't want to diss Greyhound as I DO think it should be a great way of savings for all of us. BTW, if you see a front fender for a 40 Ford Pickup....that be mine.
I, too, had a very good experience...some Porsche interior panels to New York. No damage, and arrived a day ahead of the quoted delivery time.
i have used them several times to ship out and recieve large parts fenders, steering box etc, east and west great price, no problems , will do again.
I had a roof from a 63 chevy truck with half the pillars shipped from Cali to Buffalo for $60 no problems and would do it again.
I have also had good luck using them to save on shipping. The one thing you have to remember is they fill available space and it doesn't alwaget to the terminal in 5-10 days. I had a pair of seat cushions take 3 weeks to just outside of Denver from the Seattle area, but that is unusual.
Have shipped many times by bus, much cheeper. But now they tell me,buses are going to be redone for wheelchair,so hoods and fenders can't go. bummer
I shipped 2 1939 Chevrolet Bumpers and braces to a Hamber from AR to FL in less than 2 days for around $75.00. I use greyhound when I can.
Just a side note, I've shipped several T5 trannys from California to the east coast through FedEx for $85. Back to the topic, I've shipped many, many body panels all over the US through Greyhound and never had a problem. Dirt cheap as opposed to FedEx, USPS & UPS!
I had a hood shipped to Wisconsin from Texas...horrible experience. The hood finally arrived the wooden crate was pretty much demolished and one of the hinges was lost. Contacted Greyhound and a big shot manager absolutely stonewalled me. I got nothing. They never came up with the hinge and probably never looked. The manager was a complete asshole. Have not used them since. Tom
We will never use the Greyhound assholes again. If you do decide to roll the dice on their cut rate shit shipping service..... Good luck dealing with the sub-human brainless employees that wander around these Greyhound stations. You can get the same rates by getting an account & shipping with major freight companies that specialize in shipping freight.... not passengers. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=591037&highlight=greyhound+shipping
I have shipped several hoods and a chopper frame around the country via Greyhound with no problems what so ever.
I've only had one experience with Greyhound. I shipped a set of 30 Chev doors from WA to Florida for $60. Arrived in about a week with no damage, although the packing was torn up a bit. God knows how many different buses it takes to get from here to there, but I wouldn't have been able to sell the doors given the shipping cost from the other carriers. I'd use them again. One more note, Greyhound allows payment on the delivery end, which is nice if you don't want to deal with shipping estimates before you sell a part.
Two Model A front fenders, California to North Dakota. No problems with on-line tracking across the country. Received call from Grand Forks Depot that parts were on site. Have used them in Canada with no problem as well. Just have to drive to their depot to pick up. Only problem from a Canadian's point of view -- They don't ship across the border, either way. Canuck
I shipped some 1960 Chevrolet passenger car inner fenders through them. they are a lot bigger than a person might think! California to New York .. $75.00? something like that. for everybody else it was either over size or way too expensive.
I've shipped a 51 Merc coupe door to New Jersey and a Chevelle trunk lid somewhere with no problems but I always box things up securely. The big rub with them now is that they have closed a lot of the actual terminal that handled freight and are stopping at mini marts and other places that don't handle freight. Lately I've been shipping bigger items via Fedex freight and do have an account with them that gets me a small discount.
My luck with them has been 50/50 both as a shipper and someone receiving parts. They lost a Merc roof/rear window section a customer bought and had shipped to me...not sure how that happened! They have also left things at the Greyhound station in town overnight without notifying me that they had arrived...they are reasonable, but be willing to take a risk and keep on top of them when you know parts should be arriving soon. The things that I have shipped and received successfully have never been damaged, and they do honor a military discount which is nice.
We've only used them one time, had some 1950 Ford doors shipped via Greyhound. It went fine. Obviously, we had to go to the terminal to pick them up but that was no problem and went pretty smoothly. Don
I used Greyhound to send a package (NOS swam cooler) from Brisbane to Perth, the equivalent of Los Angeles (CA) to New York (NY). It ended up travelling via Darwin, the equivalent of Bismark ND and took a while to get there, however it was damaged in transit. I made a point of packing it very well with plenty of bubble wrap etc. It was obvious that the box had been opended and tampered with enroute.
i bought a pair of 41 plymouth rear fenders from a fellow hamber in penn, long story short 3 months later, no one knows where they are at.the shipping is cheap, but i think the quality of service suffers.so if anyone finds my fenders let me know. i'm still waiting for greyhound to get there shit together!!
