Hey Alberta Hambers!! Time to pull your socks up!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jalopy Kid, Aug 18, 2009.

  1. I have found more and more that a lot of cars at show 'n' shines are owned by people who are not car people. These "Chequebook Chariots" are the cars that the owner has bought already built. Then they stick on some tacky Canadian Tire accesories, and will sit in their lawn chair and tell people they built it. If you ask how something was done, the usual answer is " Oh my friend did that" Maybe I'm just getting old, but I'm an old builder of rods and customs. I don't know what these lawnchair jockys are.

  2. What is a traditional car ? I was a kid in the '50's and loved cars. Every fall it was a big deal to scurry around to every dealership in town to look at all the new cars. I also worked part time at a body shop. Within a very short while some of those brand new cars would be in the body shop, being nosed and decked, handles shaved etc. Those cars are now respected as traditional customs. But build a later model custom today, and the response is mostly negative. I like old cars, and built quite a few, but can't dislike a well crafted custom because it's not traditional.

So, I have been reading up on old posts and since Spring is coming... I hope...as I watch the snow coming down like crazy at the moment...haha
It would be nice to meet some other Albertan Hambers... I moved from BC (lower mainland) in November. I was brought up with hot rods and drag racin (Dad is a Pioneer member of the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneer Society and been buildin hot rods since '53) Yes I am a very lucky girl and I know it won't be the same here as it was there...I drove the hell outta my '60 from last April to October...I was spoiled growing up and living in what I would call the Hot Rod mecca of BC.... And I have noticed a greater love for muscle cars up here in Fort Mac... BUT..the ones we are friends with are good guys...even if my boyfriend and I are into traditional/customs and motorcycles... By the end of April, we will be rollin Batfink and hopefully driving it down to Edmonton to see Social Distortion perform!!!!! That's the goal and everything is lookin good to be ready! (I was sanding the dash today)
It would be great to maybe have some decent "no bs" car shows to check out here... Any recommendations please let me know!!!
    Thx.

In early June there is the "History Road" car show at the Alberta Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin (not too far south of Edmonton) it's an outdoor show open to everything, free to enter and you get the full run of the museum and the aviation hall of fame and everything in between, not a competition so it's very relaxed and fun. Definitely a no BS car show. (and cool door prizes and a big goody bag for all who enter)

And an awesome museum at that.

In the fall we'll be having another Alberta HAMBr's get together as well.

I would love to go to that, I have wanted to go to any of the meet-ups for some time but generally avoid them because I don't need the stress and BS of some of the people that might show up, there is a group of "Traditional rodders" locally who are very dedicated, just as dedicated as they were to mini twucks 5 years ago... and I just don't enjoy the elitist attitudes some of them have... and I know some of them hate my truck and especially hate if I mention it was originally built in the 40's... just because it's rusty.

There's jerks everywhere (just look back in this thread ;) ) but we have yet to have anyone show up to the fall HAMB meet who has had anything bad to say about it.

When we first decided to do one, we got shit on by people on three different message boards. Got called from "elitists" (yawn, whatever) to "assholes" (real mature) by people who'd never met any of us... soley because we wanted to meet other members of the HAMB and eat a damn burger. I've failed to show up in a pre-64 vehicle for 2 of the 3 meets and managed to walk away without getting my legs broke ;)

It's a get-together to meet other members of this message board, nothing more.

    Oh Gawd! The Horror!

So when is the Wetaskiwin/Reynolds meet?

That sounds interesting but I might have to leave home 2 or 3 days ahead of time to make it there for first mornings light...

Also, I know its early but has anybody thought about the date for the 3rd Alberta Reliability Run? ??

I have already been out to Drumheller (early March), Westerdale (Feb) and just got home from a trip out to see Ken in the Three Hills area. (saw a hulk of a '32? bus hiding behind some hay bails ).

Next weekend is Garage Fever Dance and I think spring thaw shownshine is on the 19th?

Lots to see and do round here for those who are willing.

Maybe I can ride my old school pedal bike to the meet as my truck is at least a year away from hitting the pavement. When is the next one in Red Deer? Cheers.

Why is that photo of my truck backwards?

Reynolds Museums "History Road" car show is June 9 and 10 2012, free admission to the whole museum and the aviation hall of fame plus all the other cool stuff they have going on when you have a car in the show, your passenger also gets in free, you get a goody bag with a nice dash plaque and lots of cool stuff, sometimes even an automotive related book or other cool thing. Door prizes and a free professional photo of you in your car.

Did you get any photos of that?
One day I want to build another bus!

    Maybe you were turning around?

Didn't get any pics of the bus... It's missing it's front clip but the dash looks oddly 1932ish ish ish.

It looked to be typical 80 year old Alberta cast off steel, 1/2 full of rocks as well as the usual stripped out body.

Yes Peter, the main show is June 9 at the Deerfoot Inn Casino. Big raffle this year for a Model A chassis
Free regi, lots of bands and stuff, show runs 10 to 4 I think but opens up around 9
Stuff to do with the Diablos on Friday nite and a cruise on Sunday sometime...when they get up and get rid of the hangovers.:D

Bill, some guys will argue this, but its a great diner, above average food, awesome milkshakes, and an amazing atmosphere! I highly recommend it to all my friends that haven't been there.

Cool video, Flashback58! Sorry I missed the last event...

I suspect that's a new addition. The diner has become quite popular as a photo location and I understand they began charging a fee for its use recently (at least for portrait photography), so I wouldn't be surprised if they've been a bit overwhelmed by people taking liberties and poking around the property.
